4G/5G Proxy Farm for Music Streaming

Hello Guys!

I'm starting to setup a mobile proxy rig for music streaming farms and wanted to get some feedback on the stack.

The setup:

Ryzen 5 or 7 / 16GB RAM (Linux)
6x Industrial 32-port USB hubs (externally powered)
4G/5G modems with mixed ISPs

The goal is to have small hubs spread across different cities for geo-diversity. I was planning to use 3proxy to manage the connections, but I'm starting to wonder if it's the most stable solution for this scale.

A few questions for the pros:

1 - Is 3proxy a solid choice for handling ~190 modems, or is there something better/more modern for mobile proxy rotation?
2 - 4G/5G modems is the way to go, or there is better equipment for proxy.
3 - Any tips about bottlenecks I sohuld expect?

Solid hardware choice. A few thoughts on your questions:

On 3proxy vs alternatives: 3proxy works fine at 190 modems but becomes a pain to manage config files at scale. A lot of operators at that size switch to mobileproxy.space or build custom solutions around Squid with scripted rotation. If you want something more modern with a web dashboard, Proxy6 Manager or MobileHop are worth looking at — they handle modem detection and rotation out of the box.

On the USB hub bottleneck: 32-port powered hubs can be unstable with that many modems drawing current simultaneously. Recommended max is 20-24 per hub with quality industrial units (Coolgear or StarTech). At 190 modems you'd want 8-10 hubs at most 20 ports each. Also make sure your USB controllers don't share bandwidth — use a PCIe USB expansion card per 2-3 hubs.

On ISP diversity: mixing ISPs per city is the right call for streaming specifically. Spotify and Apple Music have IP reputation scoring that looks at ASN-level patterns. Having 10 modems from the same ISP in the same city behaving identically is a flag. Vary not just ISP but also SIM plan types if possible (prepaid vs. postpaid have different subnet ranges that carry different trust scores).

About the amount of modems per hub it make sense also.

  • USB hubs + modems at that scale often bottleneck on power delivery, USB controller limits, and heat — not just CPU/RAM.
  • Carrier NAT, IP reuse, and inconsistent 4G/5G session behavior will be bigger headaches than raw bandwidth.
If your goal is reliability, focus on reducing single points of failure (spread load across multiple smaller nodes) and invest in monitoring/auto-recovery — that’s where most setups break, not raw throughput.

Yeah the goal is reliability and quality.

About the USB hubs, I think power is not a problem but controller limits are. Using PCI-E controllers maybe can be the solution for that.

I'm going to dive into the alternatives for proxy stacks that can offer more options to management, recovery e etc.

It's fine, but at that scale, you might run into some headaches with stability and management. honestly, have you checked out squid it's a bit more robust, and there's a ton of documentation. also, consider your geographical spread carefully. those "small hubs" are cool, but if your ip addresses are all clustered within the same area, you're not getting much geo-diversity. think about how that affects your user experience and how it will affect your brand image

Interesting setup. A few thoughts from running something similar: 3proxy works but gets messy to manage at 190 modems — config becomes a nightmare and debugging is painful when something breaks. Most people at that scale move to a dedicated proxy management layer on top.The bottleneck you'll hit first isn't the software though, it's the USB hub chain. Externally powered hubs help but you still get phantom disconnects at scale, especially with cheap modems. Budget time for that.For geo-diversity across cities — the hub spreading idea is solid but adds operational overhead fast. Managing 6 physical locations is a different job than managing 1.One thing worth considering: if the goal is clean IPs for streaming farms, the modem count matters less than IP isolation per session. Rotation helps but inconsistent behavior between rotations is usually what triggers flags.What ISPs are you targeting for the modem mix?

Very interesting. How do USBs stream the music? Wouldn't be cheaper and maybe more reliable with real phones? (or phone boards)? Or the proxy becomes too expensive then? I'm also hoping to set up a proxy farm but for 4g proxies to rent. Do you have any advice for that you could share? I could use some real information. Thanks and good luck with everything
