X open-sourced a big chunk of its ranking algorithm, and I went through it properly. A few things in there are worth knowing if you're trying to grow on the platform, because they're not what most "growth tips" threads say.
What the code actually rewards and punishes (kept practical, not academic):
1. Negative signals are brutal. Mutes, blocks, and "not interested" taps don't just hide one post, they drag down how your account gets treated. One spammy-looking burst that triggers these can cost you more than ten good posts earn. Slow, steady, and on-topic beats spray-and-pray.
2. Replies are a double-edged sword. Engagement on your replies can feed reach, which is why "reply guy" strategies work. But low-effort, copy-paste replies that get ignored or reported do the opposite. The algorithm can tell the difference between a reply that starts a conversation and one that's just noise.
3. Dwell and meaningful engagement over raw impressions. Stuff that makes people stop, read, and respond is weighted more than stuff that just gets shown. Generic content gets scrolled, and scrolled content gets deprioritized.
4. Out-of-network reach is earned by content quality signals, not by gaming follows. If you want to escape your own bubble, the post has to earn it on engagement, not on follower count.
The through-line: the platform is increasingly good at detecting low-effort, generic, or spammy patterns and quietly throttling them. The accounts that compound are the ones that look like a consistent human with a real voice, posting and replying like they mean it.
