Considering YouTube bumper ads. Non-skippable 6 second videos. Cheap CPMs. But 6 seconds feels too short to say anything meaningful. You can barely introduce the brand let alone make a real pitch.

Is there a use case where bumper ads actually drive results? Or are they purely for brand recall and should never be used for direct response?
Anyone running bumper ads as part of a sequence, like showing a longer ad first then following up with bumpers? Does that sequence strategy actually work?

The best use case is retargeting. If someone has already visited your site or watched a longer video, a 6 second bumper can reinforce the message and push them closer to a decision.

Bumper ads are mostly for brand awareness, but if you show a longer ad first and then follow up with bumpers, it can help remind people and improve results a little.

Bumpers alone may not convert much, but combined with other ads in a funnel, they can increase overall conversions by keeping your brand top-of-mind.

Bumpers are terrible for direct sales but they work great for retargeting people who already saw your longer video ad to keep your brand in there head.

the sequence strategy actually works but not in the way most people expect

the bumper doesnt push someone to convert on its own, it just increases the chance they remember the offer when they finally see a search ad or visit the site later

ive run a sequence where a 30sec in-stream went first, then bumpers to the same audience for 2 weeks after, branded search volume went up noticeably during that period

its hard to attribute directly but the pattern was consistent across a few campaigns

They are terrible for cold direct response, but absolute goldmines for high-frequency cart-abandonment retargeting or as a follow-up sequence to a longer 30-second ad.

honestly, if the goal is direct conversions, I probably treat bumper ads as support rather than the main campaign. they seem stronger when paired with other video formats instead of working alone.

Bumper ads are pure narrative amplifiers, not direct closing tools.
You fail when you try to cram a pitch into 6 seconds. Instead, use them to deliver one punchline or emotion that really hits the mark, after a 30-second In-Stream ad has already built up the context.
When done right in a sequence they don't drive direct clicks they skyrocket your branded search volume and dramatically lower your blended CPA.

if you try to push direct response in 6 seconds, it usually feels rushed. most advertisers use them for a single clear idea like a logo, slogan, or one benefit only.

Definately use them as a sequence, show the 30s main pitch first then hammer them with the 6s bumper for crazy good brand recall.

if you use bumper ads, I’d keep it super simple one message, one benefit, or one memorable line instead of trying to sell too much.

Bumper ads on YouTube work best for reminder and retargeting, not direct selling, but when used after a longer ad in a sequence they can improve recall and conversions if targeting is tight.
