It's usually good but you still have to research it with Ahrefs or Semrush in order to avoid bad links.

Wikipedia external links are usually high quality from a trust and relevance perspective because they point to authoritative sources. for SEO they are typically nofollow so they don't pass much direct ranking value but they can still bring credibility referral traffic and brand visibility

Wikipedia external links are nofollow, so they do not pass much direct seo value but if the link comes from a highly relevant Wikipedia page related to your niche, it can still be a good backlink because of the trust and visibility.

for direct SEO value they are not game changers because they are usually nofollow
but they are high trust links and can send referral traffic if the page gets views

I think they are underrated because everyone always says "they're no-follow" but think about what comes with getting Wikipedia to point to your domain. Definitely a new positive, don't listen to anyone that says otherwise.

They are decent quality overall, wikipedia links are usually from trusted sources, so they’re good.

Honestly, 10/10 for trust and E-E-A-T, but 0/10 for direct juice since they're nofollow.
A lot of ppl skip them because of the nofollow tag, which is a mistake imo. If your link sticks, it tells Google your site is legit. Plus, you get the "echo" effect. Bloggers and students scrape Wiki all the time, so you eventually pick up natural df- links from other sites referencing that wiki page.
The only issue is that Wikipedia editors are strict af. You can't just drop a link to a commercial page, you need a really solid informational asset. But if you have one, it's def worth the time.

people always complain about the nofollow tag but wiki is actually one of the fastest ways to index stubborn pages. if you have a tier 1 asset or a parasite page that google refuses to crawl, getting a link on a semi-active wiki page usually forces the bot to hit it within minutes. even if a moderator reverts it later, the indexing job is already done. you just need to be quick and not spam it.

the real value of wiki links isn't the seo juice, it's how fast google crawls them. if you drop a link on a semi-active wiki page, your site gets indexed almost instantly. but most people just buy those cheap wiki link packages on marketplaces and then wonder why they get nuked by editors within 24 hours. if you want them to actually stick, you need to age an editor account and make a bunch of dummy edits first... otherwise you're just wasting time.

Everyone is arguing follow vs nofollow, which is the least interesting thing about these links.
@SMM Junction has the right instinct here, but you get one visit, not a habit. The bot shows up for the edit and has no reason to return unless something else points at that page. Then you are back where you started, minus an aged editor account.
The aging part answers the original question anyway. A link you have to manufacture eligibility for is a placement, not a quality signal.
