Yes, but not as deeply as long-form videos. Focus on trending topics, search suggestions, audience interests, titles, captions, and relevant hashtags. YouTube Search, Google Trends, and competitor research are usually enough.
 
I've never been big on keyword research for Shorts. Most of my better-performing Shorts came from jumping on topics people were already talking about. The ones I overthought usually went nowhere.
 
Yes basic keyword research still helps for Shorts I usually check YouTube search suggestions and trending hashtags to see what people are already looking for.
 
1. If you want Shorts Feed traffic:
Keywords barely matter. The algorithm tests your Short with a seed audience. Success here relies 100% on your first 3-second hook and your swipe-away rate.
2. If you want Evergreen Search traffic:
Keyword research is mandatory. YouTube is heavily pushing Shorts into normal search results now. If you want passive views for months, you need to target an exact-match keyword and put it in your Title and a brief Description.
What to use:
Keep it simple. YouTube’s own Auto-suggest (in Incognito mode) is still the best tool to find what real people are currently typing. To check actual search volume and competition, the free Ahrefs YouTube Keyword Tool or standard vidIQ works perfectly fine for Shorts.

Yeah, keyword research still matters for Shorts, even 30s ones. It helps YouTube understand and push your video. It’s just simple, focus on trends, YouTube suggestions, and competitor titles. No need for deep research.
From my experience, even simple SEO like picking the right keyword and matching the intent can noticeably improve how far a Short reaches.
 
For 30 second YouTube Shorts, focus on topic research more than keyword research. Use YouTube Search suggestions, Google Trends, and competitor Shorts to find what people are already watching, then create a strong hook around those topics.
 
the main reason to care about keywords for shorts isn't even search traffic, it's helping the algorithm categorize your video for the initial seed audience. if you don't give it any signals, it might test your short on the wrong group of people... they swipe away instantly and the video dies. i just make sure to actually say the main keyword in the first 3 seconds because the automated transcription picks it up anyway. no need to overthink the metadata beyond a basic title.
 
Yeah i still do basic keyword reserch, mostly using youtube search sugestions and Google Trends to see whats getting views.
 
yea kinda, keywords help ur shorts get found. u can check what ppl search on youtube by typing words in search bar, see suggestions. also tools like vidIQ or TubeBuddy helps u find trending tags. dont stress too much, short content grows more by watchtime & virality than exact keywords. just put 2-3 main words in title & desc..
 
For shorts, competitor analysis usually helps better than keyword research. Find the top performing shorts of your competitors and analyse their content, titles, and thumbnails. Try to replicate their success.
