Interesting question, for a newer site I'd probably be more focused on relevance and quality than choosing one method over the other

When the site is that new, it’s better to concentrate on establishing a strong foundation rather than focusing on volume for just a few good links can make all the difference initially

If I was working on a site that was only 2-3 months old I would be more about quality over quantity. A few relevant guest posts on real sites can really help build a solid foundation and make your backlink profile appear more natural. Once your site has gained some authority and you have content to support it, niche edits can be a nice addition but I wouldn’t solely rely on them at this point.

niche edits can work too, but the quality varies a lot and many placements are on overused sites.
i'd prioritize content and a handful of strong guest posts rather than rushing to build lots of links early on.

For a 2 to 3 month old site i would usually lean more towards guest posts first
they look more natural for a new domain and help build topical relevance
Niche edits can move faster but they can also look a bit forced if the site has no link history yet

The most important thing, whether it's niche edits or guest posts, is that they are quality first. I would rather you go with niche edits if the guest
posts are subpar and likewise with guest posts if the niche edits aren't up to a good standard.
Beyond that point, we have to consider what looks natural to Google.
A new brand that has only existed for two or three months suddenly starts to appear on these old pages where the links aren't the same?
It would seem more likely that they would appear in press releases and guest posts. You can make some together, but don't have one
dominating strategy, and with whatever you do, make sure it cannot be considered spam.

For a 2-3 month old site, guest posts are usually safer because they look more natural to Google on a fresh domain. Niche edits give a faster authority boost since the page is already indexed, but too many can look unnatural early on. A 70/30 mix favoring guest posts is a solid starting path.

I would suggest guest posts, which give good authority and trust in the initial stage. If you continue for 3 to 6 months with proper on-page optimization, then you can expect good organic keywords to pop up and traffic.

I think safe link velocity for a new site is not about a fixed number. it's about matching your competitor's growth rate. check the top 3 ranking sites in your niche on ahrefs. see how many new referring domains they gained per month when they were at your stage. match that pace. building faster looks unnatural. building slower means you never catch up.
For spotting link farms, forget DA and DR. both are easy to manuplate. instead check the site's organic traffic trend in ahrefs. if traffic dropped 80% after a google update and never recovered, google already devalued that site. a link from it passes nothing. also check the ratio of outbound links to content on the page. real editorial sites link out sparingly. link farms stuff 8-10 outbound links into every post.
One more thing nobody mentioned, check if the same site appears in your competitor's backlink profile. if a site links to 50 casino sites or 30 finance sites in the same niche, google has already mapped that pattern. those links carry way less weight than a link from a site that rarely links out at all.
