Do you update old content regularly or do you focus on publishing new content?

If time is limited..... I will prioritize updating old content that is already ranking on page 2 or 3. Fix and polish existing content then publish new content. The best is a mix of both.

If I had limited time, I would usually refresh existing content first. Updating older pages with better information, new keywords, and improved internal links often gives faster SEO results than creating new pages. Once those pages are optimized, I would focus on publishing new content.

Both are important. You cannot ignore either. If your time is more important, you can hire someone for this work.

I’ve had better luck tweaking older posts, especially stuff that’s already got some traction - fixing up outdated info, adding fresh stats or answering new questions people search for. If I spot a page that’s slipping in Google, I give it a little polish and it usually jumps back up quicker than a brand new post ever could. In 2026, reworking old winners still brings the fastest results for me.
I generally start by checking my Google Search Console before taking any action. The pages that are getting impressions but are not moving will give me the best ROI when updated, and the pages which are compeletely dead will require more of a content perspective rather than just an update perspective.
