I have some amount of SEO knowledge as I did a course on it last year and worked under a expert as a intern for some time.

(But LOL he just had me do some basic things like checking errors for website and giving him ideas whole time, never giving me or teaching me any good things practically)

After that I was doing my offline job and was not able to invest that much time in SEO learning also I kind of gave up because in marketplace they require a portfolio and I did not have one.

Now what should I do? Should I continue with SEO?
or should I just try to learn a new skill entirely?
And what can I do with my SEO knowledge so that I can do something myself with low investment monthly without searching in marketplace for jobs?

My main mission is to learn and earn to live sustainably.

If you already understand the basics of SEO, I wouldn't start over with a completely new skill. Instead, pick one area and go deeper. In my experience, Local SEO is one of the fastest ways to learn and earn because you can build case studies on your own, help local businesses, and generate results without a huge budget. Focus on getting practical experience and building a portfolio rather than collecting more courses.

Honestly, don't give up on SEO just yet. The 'internship' experience you had is common, but it's not the end.

My advice: Stop looking for jobs in the marketplace for a minute. Instead, pick a small, low-competition niche you are interested in, build a small site (or blog), and apply what you know practically. When you have a site of your own that shows even a little growth, that becomes your portfolio. That carries more weight than any certification. Stay consistent and focus on building your own asset!

Nowadays the needs for GEO/AEO is surging and there should be plenty of jobs to do. You can either get employed as a digital marketing staff or run your own biz. Use the basics you learn and start to apply it to your real work.
I agree to that idea to build up a site of your own in your interested niche and improve it by employing the techniques you have mastered. Move the pages and you will see the results.

If focus of AEO now . There are a lot of depend and highly competitive needs for it .

Why not offer your seo services here on BHW ? It will take some time before you build a good list of regular customers. Always over deliver.

Build your own niche website with a cheap domain and basic hosting, target low competition keywords, and within 3 to 6 months you will have real ranking data to use as your portfolio. Monetize it with Google AdSense or affiliate links while using it as proof of work to attract freelance clients. Your internship experience with error checking and analysis is more useful than you think, combine it with practical site building and you will develop both skills and income without depending on marketplaces at all.

I wouldn’t quit SEO completely if you already have some base knowledge. The problem is not that SEO has no opportunity, it’s that courses and internships often teach only surface-level work.
If your goal is to learn and earn sustainably, I’d suggest building your own small project instead of waiting for marketplace jobs. Pick one simple niche, create a small website, write helpful content, learn basic keyword research, improve pages, build internal links, and track everything in Google Search Console. That project becomes your portfolio.
