Is Topical Authority More Important Than Backlinks Now?

Hi everyone,

I have noticed many people talking about topical authority and content clusters instead of focusing only on backlinks. Do you think building strong topical authority is becoming more important than link building for long term rankings, or do both still carry equal weight?

focusing on both is a goog option, but topical authority seems to be carrying more weight lately. A site with strong content depth usually performs better long term because Google understands the niche better. Backlinks still matter, but they work much better when the site already has solid topical coverage behind it.
 
Both still matter honestly, but topical authority seems way more important now than before.
 
I do not think backlinks are dead at all, but topical authority definitely matters more than it used to. Google seems way better at understanding depth of content now.

In the long run, I'd rather have great topical coverage with a few quality links than lots of backlinks pointing to thin content.
 
Google has a format for this, so fillup the format and add extra to impress google that will be useful for the user. That means topical authority over a topic.

Topical authority definitely seems much more important now, especially after recent Google updates. A site with strong content depth and clear topic relevance often appears more stable long term, but quality backlinks still seem necessary for building trust and competitiveness in tougher niches.
 
Backlinks still matter. Topical authority pushes your site ahead of competition from general niche sites. Google actually encouraged topical authority to suppress the heavy influx of AI generated sites that post about everything in the world. Backlinks have always been strong signals and they never lost their influence over rankings. They are stable ranking factors.

The two work link the two sides of a coin. One is on page and the other is off-page. Back links used to be the king but the importance of topical authority is gaining increasing weight. Both are important and interdependent. Make sure that you have quality content and cluster of articles support the parent page centering on unique niches to establish your authority and also establish a sound back link network to build up popularity and trustworthiness. I would do both.
 
Take backlinks as a website's reputation and topical authority as a website's relevance. Backlinks are important, but we also need to give good weightage to topical authority.

I think both are important, but topical authority seems to be playing a bigger role than before. A website that consistently covers a topic in depth often perform better than a site with only a few articles and strong backlinks. That said, quality backlinks still help build trust and authority. In my view, the best long term strategy is combining strong topical coverage with natural link building.

I have been observing, in 2026, websites with strong topical authority are ranking higher for related search terms, even with fewer backlinks. Nonetheless, both topical authority and backlinks play important roles in SEO. So, now in 2026 and beyond, we need to give importance to high-quality content (to build authority), as well as strategic backlink acquisition.

For new and smaller sites topical authority feels more important than before. if your cover a topic deeply and build good internal links you can rank without many backlinks but for competitive keywords backlinks still matter best results usually come from having both
