@Nargil can probably answer this better than everyone...
If it's fresh domain, I only pay attention to whether it's really fresh (some "fresh" domains have been abused in the past, I've learned this in the unpleasant way a few times
), and I also pay attention to whether it sounds cool / interesting / catchy (irrespective of what the TLD is, I don't care too much about TLDs nowadays, if I like the TLD I simply register the domain regardless of whether this pisses google, or other company off... of course, I never register trademarked domains, that's for sure. But other than this everything goes...)
As for expired domains... well, that's a whole different animal, so I'll let Nargil explain as I'm not good at the expired stuff...

A few factors do matter.
- a brisk name, not too long, better within 15 letters, better without hyphen or numbers
- Clean history, not penalized or with suspicious history - It's crucial.
- Better find one in the same industry where you want to step into, to keep consistency
- DA: need to be verified, a sheer high DA doesn't necessarily mean it's a great domain name
- DR & DP, and on top of the figures:, the quality of the referring / linking sites
- Last but not least the price

A few things I always check:
- Keep it short and easy to remember
- Avoid hyphens and numbers
- Check archive.org to see what was previously hosted
- Check backlink profile (Ahrefs, Majestic, Semrush) if it’s an aged domain
- Make sure it’s not deindexed or carrying a Google penalty
- Avoid trademarked names
- Check renewal price, not just the first-year price
- Prefer .com when possible

One thing I would pay attention to is the domain's history. A clean history, relevant name, and no record of spam or penalties seem just as important as the keyword in the domain itself. I'd also check whether the name is easy to remember and suitable for long-term branding.
