Hey guys, quick question.

I bought a reg-free expired domain a few days ago (originally a garage/auto site, now turned into an auto blog, still within the same general niche/theme). It’s still indexed, and I linked it with a GBP + a few RDs.

At first it picked up impressions and rankings pretty fast, but then it suddenly dropped hard. Now it feels almost filtered — still indexed, but barely ranking at all anymore.

Has anyone experienced this before with expired domains? Were you able to recover from it and get rankings back naturally, or is this usually kind of irreversible? Any ideas on what helped?

It went down after a recrawl and the drop might have to be related to new google update that came this month.

What you can do is :

rebuild more of the old topical structure
restore important archived URLs
slow down link injections
add real branded/social signals

Google is now strict if you are the expired domain is linked to a local entity.

That’s common with expired domains that initial rankings pop is basically Google reevaluating the domain history and then the drop happens when it realizes the content is new and not matching the original site’s auth signals.

Yeh, pretty common theme. The domain rose a bit, then it got reevalued and eventually settled much lower. It's a free to register domain, treat it, more or less as a brand new domain. It's not strong enough.

Maybe Google is still re-checking the expired domain properly. I’ve seen domains rank fast at first and then suddenly drop after a few days once Google reviews the old history again. It could be old backlinks, past spam, or just sudden changes after reuse. I’d recommend avoid adding too many links right now and let the site age a bit naturally with fresh content.

Sometimes they get a temporary boost before Google reevaluates the history and topical consistency.
Doesn’t always mean the domain is dead though.

The real red flag here is linking a fresh hand-reg expired domain with a GBP (Google Business Profile) right away. Google is brutal with local entities now; pairing an immediate niche shift with a GBP and quick link injections screams manipulation to the local algorithm. That initial pop was just a recrawl, and now you're hit with an algorithmic filter. Drop the GBP, stop the link building, and let it age purely as a blog if you want any chance of a natural recovery.

yeah i think google does a weird reevaluation thing with expireds sometimes. Had similar happen before.
