This is going to be a journey thread about building a web design and local SEO agency from scratch, but with a specific approach I haven't seen many people talk about.

The goal is to build websites that are actually fast, actually rankable, and not dependent on any particular tool or platform. The way I do this is by building each section as a standalone vanilla HTML/CSS/JS block that gets deployed through WordPress Gutenberg. Over time these blocks become a library, which means each new site gets faster to build and more consistent in quality.

First of all, I look for reference websites to reverse-engineer their design principles and distill them into something coherent and original. This step is what separates a website that looks intentional from one that looks generated if you ask me.

Then Lovable for prototyping, then Claude to build the actual blocks: HTML, CSS, vanilla JS.

Then WordPress as the CMS, with each block inserted as a Gutenberg custom HTML block. The client gets a manageable backend, I get full control over the frontend.

For SEO I do proper local keyword research before touching the design. I live in a small city (80k inhabitants) and one thing I'll say about working in a mid-size city is that local SEO competition is genuinely low, same for GBP. Most local businesses either have no website or have something embarrassing. The bar to rank is not high if you know what you're doing.

I am about two months in. I built a plumbing company website (yeah no brainer) in the first month as a test of the whole process. I wanted to share some of my projects but last post got taken down for it. Anyway, since then I've been heads down refining the stack, studying references, and working on other projects in parallel, so I haven't been looking for clients. I have been working on the studio's/agency's site for the most part, although I tried reinventing the stack and will most likely delete the site and start all over again.

What I actually need from this thread

I want to find people doing something similar or close enough to have a real conversation. Not people selling $200 Wix sites, not people doing dropshipping with a side of web design. People building actual products with some "craft" behind them.

The problem I'm currently stuck on is designing the agency's own website. It's the one site I can't just reverse-engineer from references, because it has to represent what I actually do and how I actually think about design. I'm not a trained designer. I know what looks good and what doesn't, I have strong taste, but translating that into an original design without copying anyone is where I keep getting stuck. If anyone has gone through this and has thoughts, I'd genuinely appreciate it.

More to come, thanks for reading!!

Hey, looking forward to the next part, good luck with it!

I am back with an update on the studio. Last post I was talking about how I was having some trouble with the studio site. It is the 2nd time I am building it, 1st time I didnt have a clear direction to which I should be rowing and ended up on the Bahamas (Im spanish lol).

BTW lmk if I should claude my posts cuz im kinda caotic and dont got the best communication skills apparently. promise next post will be better :D

So this time, first thing I did was set up a clear visual direction to build the web, and I did build 2 pretty cool sites BUT then I had to figure out what should i actually write onto them.

SO I spent couple days writing some copy or just the content for the site. I erased 80% ish of all the text I already had in order to make a site with the lesser text I could, which for my surprise turn out pretty good.

As I finished writing the text for my home page, I ran onto the next issue. WHat should I mention into the "Services" page? On the 1st site I made, I had this lil intro and then I went silent cuz I didnt know how to keep going. SO I read 100M offers (really good book) and literally started mentioning EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING id include onto a site.

It was then when I realised I was going anywhere with that because nobody was reading that shit and it would be pretty difficult for anybody to understand what was going on so once again I deleted what I had been doing for the last week.

Then I made this services page which looked pretty good to me but IDK i went mental breakdown on the full site and deleted it entirely

Ok so where am I now? Just finished the structure and texts for the NEW site and I am ABOUT to start with the services page. I was told (by claude yikes) that reading Story Brand would help me for my services page so I read it as I was taking notes and doing what Don Miller told me and 4 days later boom I got my story brand (which im honestly pretty happy about), and alhough I dont think it solved 100% my services page issue, I do believe it will be a helpful think to have by my side.MORAL OF THE STORY:

  1. You NEED to know towards WHAT exactly is that you are moving. Brand guidelines, tone, viusals, etc.
  2. FIRST OF ALL write all the shyt you want to talk about on the site. CLARITY is KING. DELETE EVERYTHING THAT DOESNT SERVE A PURPOSE aka NOISE. DONT TALK ABOUT YOU.

If anyone wants the story brand summary I can send it through private. Thanks for reading lol

Any good AI recommendations that still have trial?

What types of AI are you asking for?

If you want to get the best bang for your buck (in case you got a limited budget) I would get claude Pro and build straight HTML JS Vanilla and CSS blocks, then paste them into a local wordpress site using Guttemberg HTML blocks.

Lovable has got a student plan for $12 or $25 if you havent got access to a student email but I would say it does have a learning curve to build decend sites and you will be running fast through the 100 credits the pro plan has (+5 daily which if you use them, they do add up to 150 extra per month)

If you just looking to build 1 site lovable does give you 5 free credits, I would use https://createtoday.io/ to get a nice result if you dont got much experience.

I'm doing kinda the same thing.

Built an AI Chatbot web app where customers pay a monthly fee to configure their own AI chatbot and deploy it on their website using a tiny JS script.
I've cold called for about 2 months now (not much time while having a full time job as well), booked 1 client so far and they ended up wanting a new website with the AI chatbot installed + doing marketing. So I switched over to "AI website" as my main product. My main form of outreach is just dialing as much as possible.

I have no experience doing marketing, but found out its better to get sales asap, and learn by doing and failing.
Curious on how your journey will continue mate

Best of luck
