My parents still think I fix computers. How do you explain your job to family and neighbours?

Hi,

Yesterday, a relative asked me what I do for a living for the 100th time. After years of failing to explain SEO, I finally cracked and said, I manipulate Google's brain so business owners can buy bigger boats.

She nodded and said, Oh, so like IT support. :D

What is the most unhinged, simplified, or outright fake description you’ve given someone just to avoid explaining your digital marketing/IM lifestyle?

Do you just tell people you're in Data Entry to save 20 minutes of your life?

Do your parents still tell neighbors you work in cybersecurity

What I would say is:

I handle the search engine dominance for a highly lucrative international shadow cartel. Do you have any idea how hard it is to rank organically on the first page of Google for 'bulk untraceable burner phones' or 'how to launder crypto through offshore shell companies while defrauding payday loan lenders'? The underground insurgency market is fiercely competitive right now. I'm basically the SEO muscle for rogue splinter cells and global syndicates. If my Wi-Fi drops, illicit global supply chains grind to an absolute halt.
 
i just say i help businesses get more customers online
anything more detailed just confuses people and they still think its some tech support job anyway
 
To make a clear understanding for them i tell we generate online customers organically not with the ads which you see ( In instagram, google or Youtube ) - I Hope this is enough.

Parents are such adorable, as long as we have them

Many can relate to what you're saying which is 100% true.

And the main part is we never want to correct them, for us it's like what they understood as per their knowledge and experience is totally fine with us

Let me say this again parents are the most precious gift so folks time to time tell them that you love them that will give you peace in life because they are irreplaceable
 
I still got asked this by a friend yesterday... It’s always a shock every time because the people who ask you this question are usually people you have known for so long.

So when they ask, I’m just always like "really?"... all this while you had no clue : D

Even some of my very close friends still ask this. It doesn’t matter how many times you tell them, in a couple months they will ask again like what you told them before didn’t make sense at all to them

After over 30 years of trying to explain a few years ago I just went with:

"I make you buy things on the internet " :smirk:

No way near even touching the start of what we do as an industry, really, but it helps those outside of the industry get a little bit closer to what you do. Just don't use it as a pitch to a potential client.... Or maybe .... ;) .

I used to give people an “Introduction to SEO” class every now and then. Nowadays, I just say I work in IT, and surprisingly nobody asks anything beyond that.
 
My parents gave up lol and I was like tell they he makes more money then we can spend (white lie) lol no one was interested in the job all asked how much does he earns lol
 
I always say I can't explain it and try to change the subject. It usually works...

But it's probably easier to say I'm a drunk and I do drugs. heh heh
Then the conversation usually turns to humor and that's it... But of course, if you want to maintain some kind of level or brand around yourself. Don´t say anything about drugs or alcohol.
I say, it´s related to marketing.

Mostly, people say, Cool - Nice.
 
After 10 minutes of explaining SEO, they still ask, 'So you're in IT?
i just tell"yes";)
