My client asked for a link on Google.com. I am not kidding.

I really wish I was joking. This actually happened.

My client sent me a message last week:

"Can you get me a guest post on Google? Their Domain Rating is 100. This would be perfect for my CBD site."

I stared at my screen for a full minute.

I had to explain to him that Google does not have a "write for us" page. They don't accept guest posts about CBD products.

His reply: "What about YouTube? Same company right?"

I closed my laptop and went for a walk.

Bless his heart. He's trying his best.

What's the craziest site a client has asked you to get a link from? Please tell me I'm not alone on this one. :)

Just give him few hundred google and youtube redirect links. And of course charge him for it. They are all 100 PA DA.

I mean... technically you're not wrong. He didn't specify it had to be a REAL guest post on Google. Just "a link on Google."

Those redirect links would definitely show up in his Ahrefs report too. He'd be so happy.

But then 2 months later when his rankings don't move, he's back in my DMs asking why.

Some battles aren't worth winning. I'd rather just gently explain reality and lose the sale than deal with that conversation later.

You actually done this before or just theory?

Next client who asks for something insane, I'm creating a fake "Google Guest Post Application Form" with questions like:

  • "How much do you love our search engine? (minimum 500 words)"
  • "Please submit 3 references from other Fortune 500 companies"
  • "Application fee: $100K (non-refundable)"
Then I'll send it to them with a straight face and see how long it takes before they realize I'm messing with them.

If they fill it out, I'm retiring. :)
 
I cant stop laughing. Sometimes you're surprised at how people can really believe such things.. its even worse when they're business people
 
you are definitely not alone, this is a universal SEO experience. Clients often see a big brand name and assume a backlink from them is just one email away. The YouTube follow up is actually hilarious because technically he was not wrong about the same company part, just everything else.

The craziest requests in this industry usually involve clients asking for links from Wikipedia, BBC, or CNN as if these sites have a contact form for backlink orders. One common one is "can you get me on Forbes" without realizing sponsored placements there cost thousands of dollars.

Bless all the clients who are trying their best while keeping us entertained.
 
Since he wants a link from google, you can give him link from google sites or other redirected links. I still remember my client asked me get me a link from high DA SAAS websites such s Github, Gitlab, Vercel, Netlify & Amazon AWS so I provided him links from these sites & he was very much happy.
 
I would just explain it to him. You earn his trust, then he will owe you something that he didn't know. He looks like a legit customer though. If you build trust with him, then sell anything to him, for sure he's gonna buy it.
 
Some people genuinely think SEO works like buying skins in a video game. "Just buy the legendary DR100 backlink pack and rankings instantly unlock "

One guy once asked me for a NYTimes publication for his sex toy shop with a $1k budget
 
bro that is hilarious clients always want a links from tech giants without knowing how anything actually works a common one is people demanding a contextual link from wikipedia or Forbes thinking you can just drop a backlink on their homepage with a fifty dollar budget you can tell him that setting up a highly optimized google business profile or building a massive branded youtube channel is the closest he will ever get to getting love from google dot com
 
You are definitely not alone. I once had a client and ask if I could get an backlink from Wikipedia's homepage because "it ranks for everything". Another wanted a link from Amazon's product pages for their local service business. Sometimes explaining how backlinks actually work becomes a bigger job than building them!
 
You're definitely not alone. I've had clients ask for backlinks from Wikipedia, Forbes, and even government websites as if they were something you could just order on demand.
 
This is really funny. Of course, not all people understand how backlinks work at all, and they offer crazy things.
Once, a client who posted a listing on my classifieds board himself asked me to remove it specifically from Google index, so people would not call him about the listing.:D
