Paid links are scams

White Hat SEO is, by definition, fully in line with Google policies. Paid links are generally outside of that policy, aka, Black Hat

Paid links could work for a short-term site, but for long-term ranking you want natural links from legitimate sources.
 
Done correctly paid links are completely indistinguishable from 'free links'. So it's irrelevant.

There is absolutely no way of anyone, including Google, determining whether a contextual link to your site on a relevant blog in your niche is paid or not, unless there blog in question is openly advertising paid link placements on-site.

So don't worry about it.

Stay away from pretty much all BHW marketplace backlink sellers / seo packages - 99% of them are pure trash (unless you use them for tiers).
 
Paid links are only scams or harmful if you buy cheap, automated spam package links or footprints from public networks that Google easily detects and penalizes. Genuine paid placements on real, high-traffic niche websites operate safely as native advertising and effectively pass authority to boost your rankings. Validating real organic traffic on target domains before buying prevents algorithmic penalties.
 
I think the issue isn't about free or paid links, but about quality and naturalness. Mass-purchased spam links can easily harm a site, while relevant links with real traffic are still very valuable.

Paid links aren’t the problem bad paid links are Google cares more about footprint relevance and manipulation patterns than whether money changed hands. Plenty of free links are pure spam too.
 
both the free and paid links can be garbage, so it's not true. You just have to find good links, but those are usually paid (but if you can find free ones that are good props to you)...

there is no such thing as *free links*. The only free links are worthless links.

Paid links, if done correctly, can do wonders for your website. But If you go for $5 or $10 links, of course you gonna end up tanking your rankings

Paid links are not automatically harmful, problem usually comes from spammy low quality links. Relevant links from real sites still help in many cases from what I've seen.
 
Paid links can be a grey area, and some strategies can definitely hurt your seo, but it's not always a scam. Focusing on high-quality, relevant backlinks, regardless of whether they're paid or earned, is generally best for long-term organic ranking success
 
It’s not about whether a link is paid or free; it's entirely about the Quality and Footprints. Google doesn't have a magical way to know if money exchanged hands, but it can easily detect a link pattern. If you buy links from public networks where everyone gets a link, it will definitely harm your site.

However, if you pay for outreach to a real, high-traffic website in your niche for a contextual placement, it passes massive authority. Free links can also harm you if they are just automated spam on dead Web 2.0 platforms.
 
Mix organic (free) links + high-quality paid placements (like real guest posts, niche sites, legit traffic)
Paid links aren’t bad — bad paid links are.
 
Depends on the quality of paid links. 1 quality paid link is far better than 100 spammy backlinks even they are from high DA / DR websites.
 
Partially true. Paid links are not automatically harmful, but they are risky if done wrong. Google's guidelines say paid links should have a nofollow or sponsored tag otherwise if Google detects untagged paid links it can penalize your site. Many sites do use paid placements safely by following proper tagging. So the real rule is not "free vs paid" but rather "transparent vs manipulative." Free earned links are always safer, but paid links done correctly with proper tags carry very low risk.

Not always.some paid links can help if they’re placed on real relevant websites with actual traffic. the problem is most sellers offer spammy bulk links that don’t last or can even hurt rankings. quality and relevance matter more than paid or free

Spammy PBN links or footer/sitewide links can be a problem but in general, paid links are better than free links. I myself focus on legit PR placements only for my sites
