Internal linking actually helped my rankings or just a coincidence?

I have a blog with around 60 posts. Never really paid attention to internal linking, just added links here and there randomly. Last month I spent 2 days fixing the internal link structure properly and some pages jumped from page 3 to page 1.
Honestly did not expect this at all. No new backlinks, no content update, just internal linking changes.

Is this normal or did I just get lucky with a Google update? Anyone else seen results just from fixing internal links?

That’s completely normal, internal linking is massively underrated for topical authority and crawl flow. A lot of people chase backlinks while their own pages aren’t even passing relevance properly. ;)
 
It is not a con incidence. Internal linking is one of the most underrated white hat seo tactics which majority of people don't care about & go after backlinks. I have seen multiple websites ranking in google, without less backlinks due to the strong internal linking & topical authority.

It very likely did help. It's highly doubtful that it was just a random coincidence.
Internal linking is one of the few SEO actions that can trigger surprisingly fast ranking movements, especially for newer sites, low-authority domains, or pages stuck anywhere between positions 5 and 30.
