Can a new site actually rank with just internal linking and solid topical structure, or are backlinks still a must from day one?

I’m building a small site right now and focusing only on content clusters + internal links first before any outreach. Would love to know if anyone has actually seen real ranking improvements from this approach alone.

One of our new sites is entirely focused on internal linking within organised clusters. Yes, we do have the obvious backlinks (Standard profiles, socials, etc.), but they are just the default when you set up a new brand. Nothing wild as of yet, but it is ranking.

Yes, it actually works ,especially for low to medium competition keywords. A solid topical authority structure with good internal linking can rank a new site without backlinks, Google rewards sites that fully cover a topic. However, for competitive keywords, backlinks eventually become necessary .but there's nothing wrong with building content first and doing outreach later once your site has substance.
