Honestly, it’s not that niche sites are “dead” in 2026 — but yeah, they’ve definitely become riskier
if you’re doing them the old way.
What’s changed is Google’s focus. It’s no longer just about targeting long-tail keywords and pumping out content. Now it’s more about
topical authority and trust. Sites that don’t show depth or real expertise are getting hit harder, especially after recent updates.
At the same time, this doesn’t mean broad authority sites always win. In fact, Google is now looking at how
focused and consistent your content is across the whole domain. A site that goes deep into one topic can still outperform bigger sites if it has stronger topical coverage.
So the real shift is this:
Old model: micro niche + few articles + backlinks = rank
New model: niche + deep coverage + real value = authority
From what I’ve seen, the best approach right now is kind of a hybrid:
- Start with a niche (for focus and easier entry)
- But build it like a brand that can expand later
- Cover the topic deeply (not just surface-level posts)
- Avoid thin or mass-generated content
Pure “churn & burn” niche sites are definitely more risky now, but niche sites with strong topical authority are still very powerful.
So yeah, I wouldn’t go super broad from day one — but I also wouldn’t lock myself into a tiny niche with no room to grow.
