Is organic reach on Instagram actually getting worse, or are audiences harder to hold now

Lately I’ve noticed something strange.
My page with
  • 50k+ followers
  • consistent posting
  • decent editing
still struggle to get reaches

Meanwhile, smaller pages with very average content randomly explode overnight.

Is this just algorithm changes, or the real issue is audience attention span?

Feels like Meta is becoming more like tiktok?

What do u think about this problem?

Related bro, audience attention span now are quicker than ever, they lost interest with content so fast, they always seek for fast dopamine, maybe we should try to refresh our content more (maybe after some months we would refresh it if we see the signal of lost interest)

kinda agree with the refresh stragegy, but what if audiences and the platform see your page inconsistent?

Yeap, organic reach for static posts has been dropping since 2020 after the rise of Tiktok. Meta is presenting itself as a direct competitor to Tiktok, and capitalizing on the drop in users attention span, which favors short video formats. The algo also heavily penalizes accounts that reposts watermarked videos from other platforms.

Unless you have botted any followers or impressions - content is key. It's always content.

In my opinion is that the Gen Z's attention span is very small. You've got to have extremely high quality or valuable content in order for the users to watch your reels and keep watching them nowadays/

The trending Gen Z approach...
Touch all..feel nothing!

They want to be all many places at once and left with no deep experience of any one.
The attention span has decreased. and its getting worse.
Teenagers are being trained without even knowing to live on short lived dopamine kicks!!

Yeah, a lot of people are noticing this lately. Meta platforms seem much more recommendation-based now, similar to TikTok, where follower count matters less than immediate retention and engagement signals.

Smaller pages can suddenly explode if a post gets strong watch time, shares, saves, or replay behavior early. Meanwhile larger pages sometimes struggle because older followers become less active over time, which weakens initial engagement signals.

It feels like the algorithm now prioritizes:

- retention
- shareability
- fresh engagement
- niche relevance
- short attention hooks

more than just audience size alone.
is there any strategy for us to remain loyalty audience like the past?

but they get bored quickly with the same content, how to stay consistent while keep the content attractive to them

Recently I saw similiar thing when a big well known page of my friend struggles on reach, it has sloid content though, while smaller page got attention by just a simple reel.

It feels like Instagram is now being similar to Tiktok, just as Tiktok pushes content, Instagram focus less on follower count than about immediate retention and engagement.

Yes, Instagram has definitely shifted more toward the TikTok model - the algorithm now pushes content more than follower count.
That’s why small accounts can suddenly blow up if a video holds attention well in the first few seconds. Followers no longer guarantee stable reach like they used to.

Audiences now have shorter attention spans and quickly lose interest in content, so we should try refreshing our content more frequently.

Its pay to play now. When I had a growth agency, once the ads started getting implemented everyone's growth was stunned. They had you addicted to the norm of likes/comments/follows you got before and once they took it away, they want you to chase it by paying for ads now. Even with paid ads it may not reach those same levels.

but is "pay to play" will be a good choice for long term growth bro

Reels are getting pushed to explore page at a higher rate than more; the reach is quite good. That being said; it is vital that you post content that users engage with so that your watch time increases

Currently, IG shows content similar to what the user has interacted with recently rather than just content from people they follow. Their goal is to keep users engaged. With custom feeds, it’s the new norm

Honestly, the creativity for posts and work input needed is much higher now. It needs to be much better content IMO

I’ve noticed the same tbh. Big pages aren’t guaranteed reach anymore, while smaller pages can suddenly blow up from one reel. Feels like IG is pushing watch time and engagement harder now instead of relying on follower count.
