Most people check DR and move on. That is how you end up with links from dead sites that do nothing for your rankings.

Here are 6 free tools that actually tell you if a site is worth your time before you spend a single dollar.

1. Ahrefs Free Version
Check the DR and referring domains. More importantly look at the organic traffic graph. If traffic is dropping every month that site is losing Google trust not gaining it.

2. Semrush Free Account
Cross check the traffic numbers. If Ahrefs shows traffic but Semrush shows zero something is off. Real sites show consistent numbers across both tools.

3. Google Search Operators
Type site:domain.com in Google. If only 10 pages show up for a site with 500 posts Google is not indexing them properly. That is a red flag right there.

4. Ubersuggest
Good for checking keyword rankings. A site ranking for real keywords in your niche means Google actually trusts it for that topic.

5. Wayback Machine
Check the site history on archive.org. If it was a completely different niche two years ago the authority may not be relevant to your topic at all.

6. Screamingfrog Free Version
Crawl up to 500 pages for free. Check for broken links, redirect chains, and thin content pages. A messy site structure hurts the value of any link sitting on it.

Run every site through these before paying. Five minutes of checking saves a lot of wasted money.

Good breakdown. just don’t rely on tools alone, quickly scan a few actual posts and see if they look real and updated. If the content feels generic or abandoned, the metrics won’t save it.

I guess, most importantly also to take a look at the site itself, if it's something that the users would want to engage at, would be a sign to look for.

Good list. Free tools are useful for filtering out obvious junk, but they don’t make the final decision for you.

At some point you still have to look at the site like a normal person:
does it look active,
is the content relevant,
do the pages get indexed,
and would you still want that link if no DA/DR metric was shown?

That usually tells you more than the tools do.

I usually start with Ahrefs to quickly check organic traffic trend and see if the site is actually alive or declining.

Solid list. I usually start with traffic + relevance first (Ahrefs/Semrush), then quick Google index check. If it has real traffic and ranks in niche, it’s worth digging deeper—DR comes last for me.

I usually use Ubersuggest to quickly check keyword rankings and see if the site is getting real search visibility in my niche.

i normally go with google search operators and then check the traffic on ahrefs/semrush.
If there's absolutely no organic traffic from a site, then i simply don't consider it.

good points. i normally start with site: search and traffic trends, then move to backlinks and history. a quick check can easily filter out low-quality sites before going further.

firstly i am open the Ahrefs no DR, I just look at the organic traffic graph. If there is growth or stability there, I check further, if traffic is going down, I skip right there.

i start with wayback + google index. history tells everything. if niche switched or got spammed before, link value weak no matter dr. after that i check traffic consistency. most ppl overtrust tools, but footprint shows in history first

This is a solid workflow for anyone serious about link building. I personally start with the Ahrefs traffic graph first because it's the hardest metric to manipulate compared to DR; if the organic trend is dipping, the link's value is usually not worth the investment.

I usually start with Ahrefs for a quick traffic + DR check then confirm with Semrush. If both look solid Ill double check indexing with Google operators

You could even give AI a shot. Just throw the guest post domain into Gemini and tell it to analyze if you should post there. It can analyze the live data it pulls and give you an answer on whether it's worth your time. If you don't fully trust it, you can demand it to provide the exact sources of its info. Although Gemini is a super strict judge most of the time.

I mean, also use common sense.

Open the site, if it looks like a PBN, it's a PBN. Check the first 15 articles, if they read like AI and all of them have backlinks, then it's a link farm.

Exactly this. Tools just filter out the obvious bad ones. The real check is opening the site like a normal person and asking yourself if you would actually read this site without caring about metrics. If the answer is no then no tool number is going to change that. Metrics are a starting point not the final answer.

Good list honestly. I still check traffic trends and indexed pages first before buyiing any guest post, saved me from wasting money some times.

I also use Ubersuggest sometimes it is simple and good for checking traffic , keywords nd basic SEO stats of a guest post site before spending money on it.

4. Ubersuggest
Good for checking keyword rankings. A site ranking for real keywords in your niche means Google actually trusts it for that topic
Ubersuggest is crap. Don't tell you nothing. Just use free ahefs and check the keywords it's ranking for.
