I want to start targeting local business, but not really sure where to start.
Whats the differences between regular seo for website keywords and local seo?

I tried to do a qucik keyword research using semrush fee account, and found some keywords which may work , I saw a difficulty score somewhere about 30-40 is this difficulty high or not?

So basically I want to start ranking local business, but dont know where to start. Can you please advice.

If you’re targeting local businesses, it helps to understand local SEO vs regular SEO.

Regular SEO is ranking your website for broad keywords globally, while local SEO focuses on location-based searches. Local SEO relies on Google Business Profile (GBP), local citations, reviews, and geo-targeted content rather than massive backlinks. A SEMrush keyword difficulty of 30–40 is moderate. It is good for local businesses, since competition is usually lower.

To start, set up and fully optimize GBP, include city/state in title tags, meta, headings, and content, build local citations, and encourage reviews. Add blog content targeting local topics and get some local backlinks. Start with 1–2 businesses, track rankings, then scale once results show. Make sure you are consistent!

If you’re targeting local businesses, the main difference between regular SEO and local SEO is intent + proximity.

1️⃣ Regular SEO

This focuses on ranking a website nationally or globally for keywords like “best accounting software” or “how to fix a roof leak.” Rankings are mostly influenced by content depth, backlinks, and overall authority.

2️⃣ Local SEO

Local SEO is about ranking for searches with local intent, such as:

  • “plumber in Austin”
  • “dentist near me”

Here, Google’s local algorithm (especially the Map Pack) weighs:

  • Google Business Profile optimization
  • Proximity to the searcher
  • Reviews and ratings
  • NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone)
  • Local citations
  • Local backlinks

So it’s not just website SEO — it’s entity + geographic relevance.

regular SEO targets a national or global audience using broad, high-volume keywords to
increase general brand visibility Conversely, local business SEO focuses on ranking
in a specific, limited geographic area, prioritizing Google Business Profiles,
"near me" searches, local directory citations, and proximity to the searcher

Regular SEO targets broader keywords. Local SEO focuses on Google Business Profile, maps, and reviews. For local, proximity and citations matter more than just backlinks. Competition is often lower, but you need strong local signals.

Regular SEO focuses on ranking a website for broad or national keywords using content quality, backlinks, and overall domain authority. Local SEO, on the other hand, targets location-based searches and relies more on Google Business Profile optimization, proximity, reviews, citations, and local relevance signals. A keyword difficulty of 30–40 is generally moderate and a good starting point for local SEO campaigns.

Two quick takes: local SEO is about local intent and signals (GBP, NAP, maps, reviews), while regular SEO aims at broader, nationwide/global keywords. Start by fully optimizing your Google Business Profile—correct name, address, phone, business category, hours, photos, posts. Make sure your NAP is consistent everywhere you appear. Then tailor your site content and meta info to include city/state in titles, descriptions, headings, and body. Build local citations and collect reviews; respond to them. A keyword difficulty of 30–40 is usually a moderate hurdle—local markets often have less head-to-head competition than national terms. Track rankings, start small (1–2 locations), and scale when you see results. Stay steady and avoid spammy local links.

Regular SEO focuses more on ranking pages for broader keywords, while local SEO is about showing up in maps and location based searches.
For local SEO, things like Google Business Profile, reviews and local citations matter a lot more. Also, keyword difficulty around 30-40 is usually manageable, especially for local terms. Starting with less competitive, location based keyword is often easier.

Regular SEO is more about ranking website pages for general keywords. Local SEO focuses on maps results and location based searches. For local businesses, start Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews, and city based keywords. KD 30-40 is usually moderate, so some local terms can still be a good starting point.

SEO: bicycle repair shop
Local SEO: London bicycle repair shop

You can boost local SEO with a few extra keywords. This also means there's less competition and your site will stand out more.

In local service business you will target a specific area its just simple like that

is a difficulty score of 30-40 considered low enough to target with a new local business website?

Just pick a niche in which you have an interest and find low-population cities because those cities will have low competition. Then make a local SEO website there and sell leads to affiliate network or local buyers.

@jelenaitmui9 No, it is a high difficulty but you get the exact idea from the SERPs. See how many reviews GBPs have in the local pack. If there are thousands of reviews for most of the profiles then it is a high competition keyword.

Regular seo is about ranking for broad keywords but local seo focuses on location based stuff like near me and google my business to show up in local searches

Regular SEO targets traditional organic results using content and link equity. Local SEO operates on a completely different algorithm focused on the Local Pack (Maps), where physical proximity, Google Business Profile (GBP) optimization, and local citations (NAP consistency) are the primary drivers. Forget SEMrush KD scores a 30-40 KD is too difficult for a fresh domain, and standard organic metrics don't apply to Map pack rankings anyway. Start by creating and fully optimizing a GBP before worrying about website keywords.

For local rankings ,target a specific area (city) instead of generic keyword.A dedicated hyper local page is easy to rank than generic one
