If you were a complete beginner starting SEO in 2026, where would you begin?

I’m very new to SEO and still trying to understand what actually works today compared to what’s outdated or just hype. I’ve been reading a lot of threads here, but honestly, the advice feels a bit overwhelming and sometimes conflicting.


So I wanted to ask people with more experience:


If you were starting completely from zero in 2026 (no website, no backlinks, no experience, and no budget), what would you focus on first?


Would you start with:

• Building a simple niche site
• Learning keyword research basics
• Trying freelance/client SEO
• Or something else entirely

Also, what’s one common mistake beginners make that slows them down the most?


I’m just trying to learn the right foundation and avoid wasting time going in the wrong direction.


Any advice would be really appreciated

There’s really no such thing as starting from zero anymore, because there are so many free AI tools available now that can help you on this journey. So make the most of them — there are a lot of things out there you can use for free without spending money, and they can help you move faster.

That’s a good point, AI definitely makes it easier to learn and speed things up now.
I think my challenge is more knowing which tools to actually focus on instead of getting overwhelmed by too many options.

“In my opinion, ChatGPT or Grok, or even Google Gemini. These AI models are currently among the top ones, and they all have free versions that are still very high quality. Even though the usage is limited, if you take advantage of all three, they work really well since they’re free.

Honestly if I was starting from zero today I’d probably just build a small niche site and learn by doing. Thats pretty much how I learned years ago. Reading guides and watching YouTube videos helped a bit, but you understand SEO way faster once you actually have a site and start seeing what ranks and what completely flops lol. I think one big mistake beginners make is trying to go too big too fast. They pick insanely competitive niches because some guru said theres alot of money there, then they get discouraged when nothing happens after a few months. Smaller niches are way better for learning in my opinion because you can actually see progress. Another thing is people obsess too much over backlinks right away when honestly content and search intent matter alot more than most beginners realize. I’ve seen pages with strong backlinks still fail because the content just wasnt that useful. Also I wouldnt depend only on Google anymore like people used to. These days alot of traffic comes from Reddit, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, stuff like that too. Google updates can be brutal sometimes so relying on one traffic source feels risky now.

1. Keyword research
2. Understand working(theory) of the algorithm
3. Create a test site with on-page seo done properly
4. Work on backlinks
5. Plan & Upload Content
6. Start experimenting

This the way to learn that will stay with you and make u some money over time
