This is a topic I love.
The problem with the whole calorie deficit way of thinking is that the human body doesn't use calories for metabolic purposes.
I'll explain.
So a calorie is a measure of heat energy released when burning food in a bomb calorimeter.
Great.
Except for the fact that the human body cannot run on heat energy.
Now when I say this on Threads I always get some guy saying "thermodynamics thoughhhhhh."
It happens pretty much every time lol.
And their point would be right...
If the human body was a CLOSED thermodynamic system.
It is not.
We regularly exchange mass in the environment.
Plus how do you even track calories when the government allows food companies to be +/-20% out from the actual amount of heat energy?
What about the thermogenic effect of food as well?
The reality is you can't.
It's just an awful thing to even attempt.
So if we can't use calories then what do we do instead?
The simple answer is the human body has extremely potent hunger signals IF not poisoned by dietary carbohydrates.
The long answer is.
We have two essential types:
Fat and protein.
Carbohydrates are not required as your body is perfectly capable of making the required glucose from gluconeogenesis.
If you do not eat carbohydrates your body will release ghrelin when you're hungry and leptin when you're full.
All this boils down to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full.
It really is that simple.
Throw in a 24-72 water fast every now and then for stem cell release and autophagy.
Carbs mess that signalling system up big time so that's why you can eat a pack of Doritos and feel hungry in 2~ hours.
Your body will over time reset to your genetic baseline of body fat%.
There is really no need to track anything.
Some body fat is needed for insulation and hormone production.
This doesn't even talk about systemic inflammation caused by constant randle cycle activation but I'm trying to keep this simple.
Btw the only exercise humans are designed for is high intensity exercise.
HIT has the added benefit of cardio as well so there is zero reason to do cardio itself for health/fitness purposes.
Long endurance stuff tends to hypertrophy the heart overtime but that's a discussion for another day.
TLDR: Fat + protein = genetic baseline of body fat %. HIT for muscle hypertrophy purposes and health. Calorie tracking is not needed.
PS: Avoid seed oils like the plague.
You're absolutely right (No I'm not Claude, but probably I am influenced by how it responds).
However, let me push back on a couple of points (just joking, LOL. You'll laugh if you use claude code a lot)
But..
I agree with everything you've said in principle and at a theoretical level it's not calories in and out.
BUT.
From a practical, every day standpoint, most people are going to get results if they try to eat around 1800-2000 calories per day and walk 30 mins a day.
There are many downstream effects from lowering the amount of food you eat. It improves your insulin sensitivity. (As does fasting, which I think I forgot to recommend)
There is an important thing I've observed over the years.
Losing fat and not gaining fat are different things.
You can eat over maintenance and not get fat depending on what you eat.
But(Yes I love butts, I mean buts)
Losing is kind of different.
To defend myself, I said the one way to lose is a 'deficit'. I didn't necessarily say it has to be a certain calorie limit.
We can only estimate with calories, and it really depends what you eat and your particular biology.
For me, I know roughly what to eat to lean up. I do BETTER when I measure the calories rather than just wing it. Not because the calories are a magic number, but because when I measure about 1800-1900, I am in a deficit.
In general it's this:
"Go to bed feeling a little hungry every day" and you'll get lean.
It's HARD to lose fat. The body does not want to give it up. That's the problem.
It's not that hard to maintain being lean.
Again, I could sum up. Every time in my life I get fat, it's because when I go to bed I feel too full.
If I go to bed feeling just right, I don't get fat.
If I go to bed feeling a little hungry, I lose weight every week.
But for most people, I would advise them "eat less, train less, walk more" as a starter, and if they really have no clue about nutrition, then advise them that the kind of food they should be consuming is meat, eggs and fruit mostly, with a little rice and potatoes for variety, and a little wheat is fine if tolerated for variety and enjoyment, but avoid white bread.
The highest energy, best feel good, optimised brain is rib-eye steak, liver, alaskan salmon, eggs, bananas, avocado, raw milk and tangerines.
And I don't salt my food, but I like to run super high potassium. I like to tell myself I'm an ancient human(just psychology which helps, because ancient humans ran 6:1 to 10:1 potassium to sodium, but I'm convinced that if everyone tried it they would be amazed at how amazing your body performs on high potassium. I literally eat ZERO salt. My only sodium is natural in fruit/meat. If my food is salted when I eat out, no problem.
I love tangerines. Each one is 80mg of potassium, so you eat like 6 of them and you've got almost half a gram of it before you even tuck into your milk and bananas.
