Is it better to learn SEO by building your own site or working for clients first?

Both help but starting with your own site is easier you can test and learn without pressure. once you understand the basics working with clients helps you grow faster and deal with real world challenges....

So you want a client to pay to learn the job they're paying you for. And worst of all, you'll be using their business site for experiments.
In my opinion, it's easier to understand SEO if you create your own website first. Writing articles, testing them, and seeing keyword trends will help you learn quickly. Many newcomers to Fiverr start off too early and just do tasks without understanding the underlying principles. It's never too late to take on smaller jobs after achieving some results.

I started learning SEO on a client's site. But, this was back when SEO was becoming a thing and it was new to everyone.
If you have a job where you can learn SEO as part of it, by all means. However, if you're going to freelance and attract clients looking for SEO help, for the love of all make yourself a portfolio of sites you've been working on. This way you can showcase your skills and avoid becoming known as a scammer/snake oil salesman or worse.

Furthermore, you can build a personal website of your own; this gives you complete control over all content, allowing you to gain hands-on experience, maximize your learning, and accelerate your professional growth.
I’d start with your own site first. It gives you freedom to test, fail, and actually understand how rankings move without client pressure. Once you get even small results, freelancing becomes way easier because you’ll have proof instead of just theory. Small gigs after that help sharpen speed and communication fast.

when you are a beginner the only thing that matters is putting in reps, so if you can take as much as possible clients as well as build something yours, that woul be great, keep in mind to not take much money or even not at all now because you are just studying

If I was starting again, I do both but lean more on my own site first. Client gigs teach deadlines and real SEO pressure, but your own site lets you actually test things without fear.

One thing I’d add is that your own site also gives you a safe space to test changes without pressure, especially when algorithms shift or strategies fail. On client sites, you don’t always get that freedom.

Honestly, I think doing both together is the best approach.
Building your own website gives you real hands-on experience because you can test things freely without worrying about client pressure. You learn keyword research, on-page SEO, backlinks, indexing, content strategy, and how Google actually reacts over time. That experience is extremely valuable.
At the same time, small Fiverr or Upwork gigs can speed up learning because clients push you to solve real problems and communicate professionally. You also learn how to deliver results, manage expectations, and work with different niches.
What worked best for me was starting my own projects first, then slowly taking small client work once I had some confidence and results to show. Even ranking a small site or a few keywords can help you get your first clients.
So if you're a beginner, I’d recommend:
- Start one personal website/blog
- Practice SEO on it consistently
- At the same time take small beginner gigs for experience
- Focus more on learning than earning in the beginning
