Do high DA backlinks really make a big difference?

Hey everyone,

People often sell high DA backlinks, but I am unsure how much they actually impact rankings today.

Is domain authority alone enough, or does relevance matter more? Has anyone seen real ranking improvements from high DA links, or are contextual, niche-relevant backlinks more effective in the long run?
High DA links can help but I’ve noticed they only make a real difference when they’re relevant to your niche....a few strong relevant links usually work better than chasing high DA sites that don’t really fit your content....

Hi DA helpfulness becomes more impactful in its relevance on a sliding scale. A score closer to 90 will move the needle far more than one with a 50 or 60, as getting to that high a rating involves factors on the domain contributing to much more authority. It's harder to fake or game the high value, regardless of contextual issues. Same for DR. But among the big three ratings systems, Semrush's authority score (AS) is the best, as it already incorporates organic traffic and overall SEO value into its score.

Backlinks from websites with high PA only become truly valuable when they are combined with relevant content and strong traffic. PA should not be the top priority when choosing where to place backlinks.

High DA backlinks can help but they are often overrated. Metrics like Moz Domain Authority are third-party estimates, nmmot used directly by Google what really mattters is relevance, trust, and traffic. A contextual link from a niche site can outperform a random high-DA focus on quality, placement and natural linking patterns over just chasing DA.

High DA links help, but relevance matters more. A related link in better than a random high DA link. Focus on quality, not just DA.

Honestly, I’d look at it like this:

DA is just a filter for whether a site is worth checking further.
Page relevance is where the real value starts.
And live traffic, indexation, and natural context are what separate a good link from a nice-looking report.

DA alone is overrated relevance and placement matter way more. A few contextual links from niche sites usually outperform random high DA links with no topical match.

DA isn’t a ranking signal context and relevance of backlinks matter far more.

Fully agree, DA is just a third-party metric not what Google ranks on, relevance, page quality and real traffic matter more, I’d choose fewer niche links over random high DA ones every time.

High DA alone isn’t enough relevance and context matter much more now. A few niche-relevant links usually outperform random high DA links for long-term rankings.

DA alone doesn’t mean much.

From experience, relevance and context matter more. A niche-relevant link on a real site with traffic usually works better than a random high DA link.

High DA can help, but only if it’s relevant and placed naturally.

DA is just a metric used by Moz, not a primary signal from Google. High DA links are still effective (especially for quick ranking), but if they're not in the same niche, they're quite weak and easily lost after updates. In reality, I've found that contextual links, relevant to the topic, and with real traffic maintain a more stable ranking.

Honest answer, DA is a Moz metric not a google metric, google does not see “DA 80” anywhere in their algorithm. So a high DA link from an irrelevant site is mostly vanity, looks good in a backlink report and does very little for ranking. What actually moves the needle: 1) Topical relevance, a DA 30 link from a site in your exact niche beats a DA 80 link from a generic news aggregator most of the time. 2) Page-level authority not domain-level, a link from a page that itself ranks and gets traffic passes way more value than a link buried on a DA 90 site’s archive page no one visits. 3) Anchor text and surrounding context, google reads the paragraph the link sits in. 4) Whether the linking page is actually indexed and crawled regularly. The “high DA backlink” sellers exist because DA is easy to sell, hard to fake relevance and traffic. If you have to choose between 10 high DA links from random sites or 3 mid DA links from sites that actually rank in your niche, take the 3 every time. The relevance angle you mentioned is the right instinct, trust it.
High DA backlink is a strong reference if the site has low spamy and no plagiarize content.
Only High DA website backlink is not enogh, because many websites has boosted their DA by tool and this is not a secure.
You need qulity content also.

High DA links can help, but they don’t mean much if the site isn’t relevant to your topic.
In the long run, niche-relevant and contextual backlinks bring better rankings and real value.

Hey @Ethann Walker ! High DA alone isnt enough google cares more about relevance and quality. links from sites in your niche with good context usually help rankings more. focus on useful content and natural backlinks, not just buying high DA links.

DA alone means nothing relevance context is what moves rankings.
A niche link beats a random high DA link every time.

DA matter, but getting backlinks with high DA without any relevance is not effective. you should mainly focus on contextual niche relevant backlinks and secondary preference to DA when your main goal is to rank your site.

DA alone means very little today.

High DA links can help, but only if they are relevant, contextual, and actually trusted. A random DA 80 link from an unrelated site often gets ignored or passes minimal value.

What consistently works is niche-relevant links placed naturally within content, even if the DA is lower because they send stronger relevance signals.

So yeah, DA is just a filter, not a ranking factor. Relevance + placement is what really moves rankings.
