I have a few old PST files that I exported from a previous version of Outlook when I had access to it. Now, I no longer have Microsoft Outlook installed on my current Windows system, but I still need to access the emails stored in those PST files. Specifically, I want to convert these PST files into MBOX format so that I can import them into Thunderbird or another MBOX-compatible email client.

Is there a reliable method or tool that can help me convert PST to MBOX without requiring Outlook to be installed? I am looking for a solution that works on Windows and does not compromise data like email formatting, attachments, or folder structure.

Be careful with shady free converters some break attachments or scramble special characters. If you value your data, best to test on a small PST first, then buy a proper license if it works well.

You can repair the PST file with the ScanPST exe (a Microsoft free tool) or with the 3rd party PST repair tool like Stellar Repair for Outlook. About the ScanPST, it is a free tool that can solve the minor errors of the PST file, and the chances of the description of the mail are high with the scanpst. In the case of the 3rd party tool like Stellar Repair for Outlook, it gives the ample opportunity to users to repair and save the large serverly corrupted files in the new PST file. In the demo version of the tool, users can get a preview of corrupted mailbox data such as emails, contacts, calendars, public folders, etc.

To convert PST to MBOX without Outlook installed on Windows, use the Softaken PST to MBOX Converter Tool. You can easily convert single and multiple PST files into the MBOX file format. It allows for the conversion of all emails in the PST files into the MBOX (Thunderbird) file format with Attachments. This application supports all email clients of the MBOX file such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Poco Mail, Power Mail, etc. It gives a free demo version for all users. This tool works on all Windows OS versions.

What comes to my mind is Outlook Freeware for one. There is also PST-MBOX Converter Using Thunderbird & ImportExportTools NG. The latter method involves importing the PST to Thunderbird and then using the ImportExportTools's NG addon to explort as MBOX. I use it for other kinds of conversions, but I assume it would work. TBH, I have not really needed MBOX files myself in my work.

To convert PST to MBOX without Outlook installed on Windows, you need a tool that can read and export PST files independently, since Windows doesn’t support PST natively. A direct manual method isn’t available without Outlook, so the easiest and most reliable approach is to use a professional converter that works on Windows and doesn’t depend on Outlook.

A solution like the BLR PST Converter Tool lets you load your PST file, choose MBOX as the output format, and convert emails, folders, and attachments securely. It preserves the original structure and works for single or multiple PST files in one go. This method is fast, accurate, and avoids the complexity of manual workarounds.

For hassle-free PST to MBOX conversion on Windows without Outlook, using a dedicated converter tool is the safest and most efficient option.

Yes, you can convert a PST file to MBOX on Windows without installing Microsoft Outlook.

Since PST is a proprietary format, Windows cannot open it natively. The most practical solution is to use a standalone PST to MBOX converter that works independently of Outlook. These tools can read PST files directly and export them to MBOX while preserving folder structure, attachments, and metadata.

Avoid random free tools, as many limit exports or corrupt data. Always test with a small PST file first before converting your full archive.
