Core Web Vitals still matter more than people admit
 
tried this last year, sped up my load time from like 6 seconds down to 1.8 and saw basically nothing change for 3 weeks. turns out my bounce rate was high because the content was garbage, not the speed, so fixing the "negative cycle" the op mentions didnt matter when the real problem was elsewhere.
 
Good point — page speed is often ignored.

I’ve seen sites with good content struggle just because of slow loading. After fixing speed (images, caching, fewer plugins), bounce rate improved and rankings started getting better.

Also, a 70 score isn’t “good” if competitors are faster. Real user experience matters more than the number.
 
Site speed definitely gets ignored more than it should.


Quick question, was most of the improvement from WP Rocket alone or did you also change images/CDN/cache settings manually?


Also, in your experience, is WP Rocket still genuinely worth it now, or are there free setups getting similar results? If this works that easily, it’s a solid win.
 
Solid breakdown, page speed is one of those things people only fix when its already too late. One angle worth adding, speed gets you the click and the engagement but if the page itself doesn’t match search intent google still won’t rank it. Seen sites with 95+ PSI scores stuck on page 5 because the content angle is wrong vs top 3. Fast loading + intent match is the real combo. Tool I have been using for the intent side is freeserp.com, pulls live ranking, crawls top 3 competitors and shows exactly where they are beating you on title H1 internal links and content depth, then gives an AI plan you can chat with. Pairs well with what you posted, speed handles the user side, this handles the google side.
 
Good reminder — speed is one of the few ranking factors you actually control.

Two things worth adding so people don't chase the wrong number:

1. The PageSpeed/Lighthouse score is lab data. Google ranks on field Core Web Vitals (real users — LCP, INP, CLS from CrUX). You can hit 100/100 in the tool and still fail CWV in the wild. Check Search Console → Core Web Vitals for the truth, not the one-off PSI run.

2. WP Rocket's "Remove Unused CSS" + "Delay JS execution" give the biggest gains but also break layouts/sliders more than anything else. Enable them one at a time and test — don't just tick every box and walk away.

Honestly the biggest single win for most WP sites isn't caching, it's the LCP element: serve the hero image in WebP, correctly sized, and preload it. Moves LCP more than half the toggles combined.

What host are you on? Half the "slow WordPress" problem is just cheap shared-hosting TTFB.

Technical audits often have the fastest ROI. Crawl budget issues from thin or duplicate pages, missing canonical tags, internal linking gaps, orphaned content - fixing these can move rankings without any new content or links. Worth doing a full technical audit before adding more content to a site that's underperforming.

I'm surprised at how often page load speed is underestimated, considering that it's a fundamental pillar of ranking.

Why? Negative Cycle!

Visitors often leave your site in the first few seconds = higher bounce rates and less time on pages.
It also means your pages do not deliver what the visitors want and hurt your Google trust score.

So your ranking either drops or stays low.

What message do you want to send to Google?
Your site is of such low quality that visitors constantly choose to leave it!
