What do you think modern hosting panels still get wrong?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask something to people here who have real hosting, VPS, shared hosting, reseller, or server administration experience.

A lot of hosting panels have been around for years, and while they solve the basics, I still feel there are some recurring weak points in day-to-day use.

I am curious how people here see it in 2026.

What do you think modern hosting panels still get wrong?

I am especially interested in practical opinions from people who have managed real customers, multiple accounts, or production servers.

Some examples:

  • Is account isolation important to you, or is it overrated in real-world hosting?
  • How important is resource visibility and control on a per-account basis?
  • Do you think Docker support belongs inside a hosting panel, or should it stay outside?
  • How important are migration tools when evaluating a panel?
  • What do most panels still handle poorly in multi-tenant environments?
  • What makes you trust or distrust a panel quickly?
  • What features sound good in marketing, but do not matter much in actual usage?

I am not asking from a buyer perspective only.
I am also curious from the operator side:
what actually reduces workload, lowers risk, and makes server management cleaner in practice?

Would be great to hear from people who have used cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, CyberPanel, Hestia, CloudLinux-based setups, or custom stacks.

Interested to hear real opinions, especially from people who have seen both the technical side and the customer side.
 
I think that most vendors are directed to the needs of their clients. If most of the clients want control panel A. I think that it is a good idea to implement this panel and offer it to clients.
 
Most panels still suck at isolation, observability, and migrations. They love selling shiny checkboxes, but the real pain starts when one noisy customer, one broken update, or one messy restore turns the whole server into a circus.

There's good panels like SPanel and Enhance which are gaining more and more attention for the good work they do. Also there're Hestia, CyberPanel and many more. You'd actually be surprised if you start researching how many are there nowadays.

So people now are not limited down to a few options and companies to have to push the price hikes down their throat, no. Actually for the first time ever users have a choice.

A lot of providers naturally follow what customers already know and ask for, especially when familiarity helps sales and reduces onboarding friction.

At the same time, I sometimes think customer demand and operational quality are not always the same thing. Clients often choose what feels familiar, while the provider has to deal with the long-term workload, recovery complexity, and risk behind the panel.

From the hosting company side, do you think familiarity still matters more than cleaner operations and lower risk in practice?

I agree that the real test is not the feature list, but what happens when something breaks: a noisy tenant, a failed restore, a bad update, or resource abuse spilling across accounts.

That is usually where a panel shows its real quality. It is easy to look good in normal conditions. The harder part is staying predictable when the environment gets messy.

In your experience, which one tends to hurt the most in practice: weak isolation, poor observability, or migration and restore complexity?

I agree that more competition is healthy for the industry, especially after the pricing pressure of the last few years.

Having more choice is clearly better than being locked into only a few familiar names. What I am trying to understand, though, is where people now draw the line between "good enough on paper" and "actually trustworthy in production."

A panel can look competitive in a feature comparison, but real confidence usually comes from how it behaves during migrations, restores, updates, and multi-tenant load.

For you, what separates a serious panel from just another long feature list?

One thing I still see is limited resource visibility per account. It is harder to troubleshoot when you can't clearly see what's using CPU or memory. Also, migration tools in panel like cPanel or Plesk help a lot, but they are not always smooth in real use. Simple, stable features usually matters more than adding too many new options.

Most panels overcomplicate simple tasks resource limits often misleading docker support still clunky migration tools unreliable real isolation rarely perfect.
 
I would say almost all new panels and industry leading panels like cPanel and Plesk have these options, but really for cPanel there is so many security issues, so I would recommend directadmin, its a very good panel and also pricing is good.

For cPanel, you have to be very good administrator to patch it all up, yet about features surely cPanel is brilliant at that, but directadmin is good too, also directadmin is a bit fast at tasks.

From my view, resource visibility and account isolation are still very important, especially on share setups. A lot of panels look good on paper but make troubleshooting slower than it should be. Clean UI, stability, and easy migration matter more than extra features.
 
The recent cPanel security incident clearly demonstrated this:

The issue is no longer which panel offers more features, but
"how well can a panel maintain system control when it fails?"

We saw a vulnerability like CVE-2026-41940:
a single weak point → auth bypass → root access.

After this point:
UI, feature list, integrations are meaningless.

The real-world scenario is:
- a client commits an abuse
- a restore fails
- an update breaks the system
- or an exploit enters

This is where the panel's quality becomes apparent.

Today, most panels still have weaknesses in:
- true isolation (tenant → tenant jump is still possible)
- correct resource visibility (it's not clear who is consuming CPU/IO)
- reliable migration/restore (most are at the "hopefully it will work" level)

And the most critical issue:
backup is a must, otherwise it's over.

Because after an attack, what you discuss isn't the panel, but
"how much data I lost".

Speaking specifically about cPanel:
It's powerful in terms of features, yes.
But keeping it secure and stable is now a serious operational burden.

So, the panel:
while it should reduce the workload,
in most scenarios it requires extra attention and intervention.

I think the industry is at this breaking point:

“Feature richness” → is losing its importance

“Isolation + observability + recoverability” → is becoming the real value

And there's another interesting breaking point here:

If you ask even the worst AI today,
“What is the most modern server panel released in 2026?”,

most of the time classic solutions like cPanel and Plesk
don't even make it to the top of the list.

But despite this, people still
continue to pay thousands of dollars in license fees.

Why?

Because the industry operates not on technical correctness, but on habits and risk perception:

- the confidence that everyone uses it

- workflows that teams are accustomed to

- familiarity on the customer side (ease of onboarding)

- fear of migration (risk of disrupting the employee)

In other words, people choose not the best solution, but the one that will produce the fewest surprises.

But recent events clearly show this:

Habits don't save bad architecture or weak isolation.

If a system:
- cannot isolate the error
- cannot limit the attack
- and cannot provide a clean rollback

Being "the standard in the market" doesn't make it reliable.

In short, the industry is moving slowly,
but the direction has changed.

And the determining factor in this change is not:
which panel is more modern?
which panel doesn't cause loss of control even in the worst-case scenario?

Major stuff:
1. Email observability / spam filters / preventions of the entire server's IP blacklisting because of 1 bad actor.
2. Isolation and backups (for some reason, not ideal)
3. better AI support
4. Security

I've noticed that some panels are prioritizing ease of use and customer familiarity over actual security and stability, which is a recipe for disaster. The industry is slowly shifting towards valuing isolation, observability, and recoverability, and it's about time, because at the end of the day, it's not about which panel has the most features, it's about which one can keep your data safe.

Have you done any research? Today, there are panels that do all of this, and they're even being released in 2026. When I asked the AI which is the most modern server management panel in 2026, cPanel and Plesk didn't even make the list.
