War between SEO vs Google - Who is really winning?

If Google wins - Why rankings still fluctuate daily?
If SEO wins - Why updates kill sites overnight?

What do you think about it?

Google wins. SEO exists to improve rankings on Google search, and as long as SEO continues, Google will keep attracting a massive user base.

it is not really SEO vs Google, it’s more like SEO adapting to Google’s changes all the time. Rankings fluctuate because algorithms keep testing quality, and updates hit sites when signals don’t match what Google wants.

There is no real winner here, Google set the rules and SEO just adapts. It is more just a game of adjustment than a war.

Because they constantly reevaluate the results.

Because you cannot rank consistently when rules keep changing.

It’s not a war SEO just adapts to updates from Google Rankings fluctuate because algorithms are constantly refining quality signals, not because either side is winning

I think no one is really winning
Google keeps changing rules…
SEO keeps adapting.

If Google fully wins → backlinks shouldn’t work
If SEO wins → updates shouldn’t affect rankings

So it’s just a never ending game

Do you think backlinks will still matter in future?
Or will they just evolve into something different?

Google wins the long game but seos win the quick sprints, rankings move around because google is always testing new ways to keep users happy, while updates kill sites once their tricks get too obvious, It's just a constant cycle of google closing doors and seo's finding the windows.

Both are depending each so there is no wars lol

Feels like neither side is really winning it is more like a constant tug of war. Google keeps changing to improve results , while SEO keeps adapting , so fluctuations and sudden drops are just part of the game. Honestly , it is less about winning and more about keeping up.

Google has a market cap of ~$4 trillion USD. Google is winning. The best we can do is siphon as much of that away from them as possible.

Neither is “winning” it is an evolving system, not a war. Rankings fluctuate because Google is constantly testing, re-weighting signals, and refining intent matching not because it’s losing control. Updates kill sites when they were relying on fragile or over-optimised signals that stop working overnight.

SEO still works, but the game has shifted: it’s less about exploiting gaps and more about building stable, trusted signals that survive change.
