This question comes up quite often, and it’s easy to see why. At first glance, it doesn’t make much sense that residential proxy providers charge per GB when bandwidth itself is relatively cheap, especially on home connections. But once you look a bit deeper into how these services actually operate, it becomes clear that the pricing isn’t really about bandwidth at all. Below are the main reasons why pricing is usually based on GB.

1. GB is a simple way to measure how much you’re using the network
Even though bandwidth is cheap, providers still need a way to track usage. Charging per GB is just the easiest and most standardized way to do that. It’s straightforward, easy to monitor, and scales well. More complex models like charging per request or per target would be harder to implement and explain.

2. It reflects how much you’re “wearing out” the IP pool
The real resource in residential proxies is the pool of IPs. The more data you use, the more requests you’re likely sending. That means those IPs get used more heavily and are more likely to get flagged or blocked. So GB is basically a rough proxy for how much strain you’re putting on their IP network.

3. It helps prevent abuse
If pricing wasn’t tied to usage, people could run extremely heavy scraping or automation without limits. Charging per GB creates a natural cost barrier. If you want to push more traffic, you have to pay more, which discourages people from abusing the system.

4. Managing residential IP supply is actually hard
Unlike datacenter proxies, residential IPs come from real users. Providers have to convince people to share their connection, keep them online, and rotate those IPs constantly. That’s a lot of overhead. So even if the raw bandwidth is cheap, maintaining that network isn’t.

5. You’re paying for “clean” and reliable IPs
What you’re really buying is access to IPs that look like real users and aren’t blocked. Those are valuable. A clean residential IP can get you access where datacenter IPs fail. The GB pricing is just how they meter access to that resource, not the actual product itself.

6. It aligns with most real-world use cases
Most people using residential proxies are doing scraping, automation, or data collection. In those cases, data usage tends to correlate with activity level. So charging per GB ends up being a reasonably fair way to price different levels of usage.

7. The market has settled on this model
At this point, per-GB pricing is just the industry standard. A lot of providers resell each other’s networks, and everyone sticks to similar pricing structures. Even if it’s not perfect, it’s what customers expect and understand.

gb pricing roughly maps to support load. low traffic users usually stayt quiet, heavy users are the ones pushing sticky sessions , frequent rotations, weird targets and then blaming the network when hit rates drop. its not a perfect modem but it operationally makes sense.

from running mobile pools myself, the hidden cost is churn, not raw tarffic. especially with cellular traffic, alot of IPs sit behind cgnat and the good ranges can burn out fast too if too many users hammer the same carrier ppool. per-gb is a good way to price that risk
 
I look at per-GB pricing as a proxy for pool pressure, not bandwidth cost. With residential, the expensive part is keeping enough clean peers alive and usable, not the raw traffic itself.

One thing I'd add is that GB pricing also helps distribute resources more fairly across the pool. Heavy users naturally consume more IP time and rotation capacity, while lighter users aren't subsidizing large-scale traffic. That's another reason why the model has become the industry standard for residential proxies.
 
I also think page size matters more than people admit. One target can burn 50x the traffic of another, so per-request pricing looks clean on paper but gets messy fast.
