Why do some websites rank higher even if they use a few backlinks?

Because Google cares more about Quality, Relevance and Trust than just backlink count these days.

There's more to ranking than just links. You're more likely to rank when your content is spot on wittj fewerinks than when you have poor content and more links.
Moreover, fewer number of links doesn't automatically means less quality of links. Sometimes you could pack all the links in the world but they're neither relevant nor quality.

Because Google now values content relevance, site authority, and user experience more than just backlink count. A few strong, niche-relevant links often beat dozens of weak ones.

Because the quality of the links matter more. The websites who have lower number of links may have in fact better social media presence , better content and more relevant and be associated with trusted sites and so on.....

It can be because of other factors also like good quality content. So, you should make sure that your website is on top for all the factors which google considers for ranking.

the quality of back links matter. so even they have fewer but high quality backlinks, the site will rank better than ones which have a ton of low quality backlinks.

i looked at the thread — many websites rank higher with only a few backlinks because they nail other signals: strong on-page content, user experience, fast page speed, good relevance, and maybe solid domain age. in short: links still matter but they’re not everything. if your site ticks most boxes you might not need hundreds of links to rank.

Sometimes it's not about the number of backlinks but the quality and relevance. A few strong links from trusted sites can do more than hundreds of weak ones. Good content and proper on-page SEO also make a difference in rankings.

Low competition, best quality content, new in the industry, influencers these might be the reason behind ranking. Though it requires some other kinds of audit which is not possible without the website.
