Why do some websites rank higher even if they use a few backlinks?

Hello please update on this
There's more to ranking than just links. You're more likely to rank when your content is spot on wittj fewerinks than when you have poor content and more links.
Moreover, fewer number of links doesn't automatically means less quality of links. Sometimes you could pack all the links in the world but they're neither relevant nor quality.

Backlinks are a strong ranking signal, but they are not the only factor; backlinks don't do all the work. Years ago, backlinks dominated the SEO market, but now the time has changed and SEO has evolved. Now, backlinks are ranking signals, but many other factors also play a role. You can outrank competitors with fewer links if you deliver superior intent match, content quality, topical authority, internal linking, technical performance, freshness, and user satisfaction signals.

Keywords in titles, headings and meta descriptions improve rankings even with few backlinks.

Because unfortunately it's not so easy as a number's game, it's not about getting millions of spammy low quality backlinks

Backlinks are important, but content quality and relevance often outweigh sheer quantity.

Because Google now values content relevance, site authority, and user experience more than just backlink count. A few strong, niche-relevant links often beat dozens of weak ones.

Because the quality of the links matter more. The websites who have lower number of links may have in fact better social media presence , better content and more relevant and be associated with trusted sites and so on.....

because they often compensate with other strong factors, such as superior content quality, high domain authority, strong on-page SEO, and a great user experience.

the quality of back links matter. so even they have fewer but high quality backlinks, the site will rank better than ones which have a ton of low quality backlinks.

i looked at the thread — many websites rank higher with only a few backlinks because they nail other signals: strong on-page content, user experience, fast page speed, good relevance, and maybe solid domain age. in short: links still matter but they’re not everything. if your site ticks most boxes you might not need hundreds of links to rank.

Sometimes it's not about the number of backlinks but the quality and relevance. A few strong links from trusted sites can do more than hundreds of weak ones. Good content and proper on-page SEO also make a difference in rankings.

Backlinks are not the only metric Google considers when ranking a site; other crucial factors include up-to-date content, relevant links, link quality, and domain structure.
