Imagine there was a website where users share their URL's, share earnings, SEO strategies, keywords and monetisation techniques along with how much they made... Well there is!

Let me introduce you to flippa.com...

A lot of people give it a bad name due to a history they have of people getting ripped off or whatever, I don't know enough about it to comment on that, but if you're a noob and you're looking for examples of sites that make money that you can study/replicate/copy/steal, it's a pretty good place to start.

I found such a site last month and thought I would do something with it. I thought a journey thread would be a good way to give something back and also try and create BHW's first journey thread that's worth reading.

So what am I copying?
The site is a small and niche business directory for a specific type of businesses.

It makes $50-$70 a day on Adsense totally passively.

Semrush says it ranks in the top 10 for 223 keywords, and the verified analytics data on the Flippa listing was showing 70,000 hits a month.

It has no links, seriously:

The site is also total shite. Each content page includes a 35 word description with the city/state loaded into the exact same text, with 3 - 10 business listings (phone, address, business name) and that's it. Thin and duplicate content everywhere...

And that makes sense when you see they have 15,000 pages (scanned with screaming frog), but only 3500 are indexed in Google.

This site is total shit, it's the perfect example of the type of site you should target when doing things like this... and also the exact type of site you DO NOT EVER list publicly on Flippa.

Next step, I need to scrape all the content from this website and get it formatted so I can post it myself.

Yeah I've seen people buy, upload a theme, resell after keeping ads on there. Win win.
 
But won't this require a lot of time investment? You would have to look through every single listing and then look up the site on different tools and such to see if the site would be worth copying right? Maybe if someone could code a bot to do this automatically, it would be worth doing, but doing this manually? Damn.

I spend 20 mins on there a day, it's really no bother...

As for recreating the site, I estimate 2 days...

The keywords this site ranks for a major long tail and low comp, but most of them are only 20/searches a month.

A SEO would never target them specifically, it would be pointless.
 
Hmmm, just wondering.. what makes you believe that those b.s flippa websites make any real profite :)
 
@Ste Fishkin i wouldnt call this heartbreak
this is more like going to the bathroom during the date and jumping out the window to escape and leaving her the bill
 
This method works 100% sure. I've been doing something similar years ago with couple of really experienced sellers.

I was a seller at Flippa for a long time (even before it became Flippa) myself and I've worked with some guys that are just in flipping business (I was creating sites at first), then I've made some sites/systems/scripts for them. They had huge customer base and everything worth buying went away as soon as decent money was rolling in (for established sites).

Couple of hours a day they were checking out other listings, especially the ones that were selling well and we were reverse engineering everything to the level of improving every step from very start and make site better/faster more optimized and of course to outrank original. :)

Good luck @Ste Fishkin at your journey. This will work, just be careful when picking sites to redo and make sure that they are real money makers and not spam sites built up just for re-sale.

I guess anyone wanting to sell a site that's making serious money should never list at flippa. I used to spend a lot of time on flippa, just looking at sites that were attracting bids. A lot of the sites were junk - but there usually are a handful of good ones.
 
the links are hidden you bastard , good luck outranking them unless rand personally offers to be your own genie
 
I've actually been doing this recently, looking for ideas from Flippa. Things aren't always what they look like on the surface though with Flippa sites when you look deeper into the site's backlink profile and history.
 
Isn't your Adsense account somehow in danger because of the "shite" website you copied?
 
how you check flippa for interesting pages ?
