I've got a few expired domains I scraped that are fairly powerful with edu links. What would you guys say is the better approach longterm? I plan on keeping my money site for a long time and rather not have it deindexed. Thoughts?

If they are niche related and have high value links (elite links like Fox News, .gov links, etc) then 301. If its just a good (not a great) domain then its more fit for a PBN. But keep in mind that you can't 301 very many domains safely at all... so choose carefully.

how many sites yol'd considered to be on the safeside

Well think about, if you have a small website like a review site or some sort of adsense site it doesn't make sense that you have 10 domains 301 to it now does unless you are gaming the system of course :)

301 is much more risky because i believe it violates Google ToS, It is also more powerful

it is not against their TOS, but having too many 301 domains pointing to yours is rather suspicious

301 redirect is more risky. Because certain penalties seem to carry over via 301s while others don't. As long as haven't had big incoming link explosions in the past few months, and you're not targeting the same keywords as their incoming anchor texts, you should be fine. But be cautious to redirect because too many redirect in many domain is not good,

No it isn't, but you can bet your ass that having a lot of 301 to a small to medium site a red flag is, i have been burned with this multiple times and i still have to figure out what the sweetspot is, for a small/medium, site under the 100 pages i would not go higher than 2 301 domains for bigger site you can gradually add more, but it is always tricky

What would you guys recommend for this specific domain i scraped. The website was previously owned by my university but was discontinued. The site only has 7 backlinks which are all belonging to the university. Would this particular site make a good 301 or should i just make it a pbn. So far I have zero 301 links to my fairly new small website (ive been building it up as white hat as possibe).

You can redirect expired domains if it's related to your money site or use it as PBN to boost your money site rank.

You could do 301 with that, don't know the metrics of the backlinks but 7 isn't really all that high you can easily 301 that to your moneysite imho... just don't do to many 301

The risk is getting your site banned by Google, just like anything blackhat. So if the domain isn't HIGHLY relevant to your niche, and if it doesn't have a GREAT link profile its not worth the risk attaching it to your baby. I only 301 maybe 1 or two REALLY good domains to me sites. And sometimes if I can't find anything in my niche with good enough links I don't bother. That's playing it conservative though and I know some here who claim to do more... but to me the question is finding domains that are good enough to bother.

I want to de-index my 150 article website and start a new one with same articles. But the current site is 3 year old and also got 16 genuine .edu backlinks in addition to other PBN/web2.0 backlinks. So I want to capitalize on that. Would 301 be a good idea?

If you want it to work in a long-term ill suggest to go PBN way. Make a legit looking website and you're good to go.

Safest would be to 301 the best two niche related to your money site but no guarantee it will boost your rankings. If you build a PBN there is always a risk of getting penalised. Depends what you mean by long term in actual months or years.....

Pbn is more flexible and better but need more time to build contents and new link building for itself. I loves pbn with better link juice from wiki that is the best.
