Ask Me Anything about selling on eBay

OK so here's my dilemma: I'm dropshipping from amazon to ebay. I'm trying to figure out a way of safely using amazon photos on my ebay account without getting into trouble with Ebay. I'm thinking of just slightly cropping or resizing each photo (reducing height by about 10 pixels) and removing all exif data and then uploading it to my ebay item. However, I'm also thinking about adding a watermark to each photo to make it even more unique. I was thinking of watermarking it with my own ebay seller account name. I don't know if this is a good idea tho. Could it or would it get me into trouble with Ebay? Would you recommend watermarking with my own account's name or just some random image (I don't know what this image would be tho!). What do you think?

slight modification of an existing photo would work as long as the original rights holder of those photos don't complain to eBay. If they're on amazon only and not on eBay, they should be relatively safe.

You are super cool man
good to know about your experience
I am not into ebay business but surely in future, I will contact you for some help (if you don't mind)

Thanks for the reply! I'm just going to stick to small rescaling of each photo.

just make sure that the photo is not being used by the seller on amazon on ebay under a different name or something. jacking my high quality photo is one thing that I will try to get a competitor/dropshipper suspended for on eBay.

I don't understand how everyone is getting banned from ebay left and right.

From what I've researched:
1. Ebay doesn't care if you dropship
2. EBay doesn't care if you have multiple stores

So whats the need for stealth ebay/paypal accounts at all? I must be missing something pretty big here. I understand having to make multiple amazon trial accounts for shipping and such. But I don't see any reason why ebay would hate a seller with multiple storefronts for different niches?

Hope this isn't too dumb, would really appreciate your input though Tom. I've been DS'n for about 3 months now and am really starting to pick up sales and momentum, and don't want to lose my main account for something I didn't realize.

it's generally from doing shady stuff, selling fakes, ramping up too fast, or being linked to past banned accounts. It's really not that difficult to run stealths if you avoid doing those things.

From what I've researched:
1. Ebay doesn't care if you dropship
2. EBay doesn't care if you have multiple stores

Remember, you can be subtly affected by eBay limiting you, like leaving you alone but never increasing your limits if they find out you're doing nothing but arbitrage selling. Also, eBay doesn't really care if you have multiple stores, but if you start listing same items across multiple account they will drop the ban hammer on you.

Because all it takes is one crazy customer or eBay rep to get you banned if you're really unlucky, and to throw off the competition on what exactly you're doing.

As I tell my employees, there are no dumb questions, only dumb people who don't ask questions.

The point is you can lose your account for pointless stupid stuff and any interaction with eBay can be escalated into something that will cause your account to be banned. I once had an account banned because an eBay rep in Philippines basically called me a liar when I complained about something on one of their seller surveys which quickly got escalated to a 7 figure selling limit account getting banned, because I kept telling the rep (nicely mind you) to go on eBay and check it out for herself. Later I found out that reps HATE being asked to speak to the manager and then the manager will ban you if you keep sticking to your guns rather than kissing eBay's ass even when they're wrong.

^ Thanks for the reply Tom! Clears things up a lot

Do you have any idea how much 'views-to-sales conversions' plays in ranking listings?
For example, do you believe it's better to have a listing that...

1.) has 50 views and 5 sales,
so a sale every 10 views

or

2.) has 1000 views and 50 sales
so a sale every 20 views

Is there any data to show that one way is better than the other? Specifically for ranking in the listings within ebay? (assuming it's all withing a similar time frame) I have access to generate a lot of views per day, just not necessarily to people that would buy . So it's based more on conversion rates, than it might be counterproductive for me to do.
Thoughts?

Thanks again for this thread, it's cool to see someone so successful doing something like this!

Exactly how this works is proprietary info by eBay but IMO in the long term sell through rate is the #1 factor in how good of a search placement you get. This is why I don't think buying watchers on fiver is a good strategy. In increases your views in the short run, but it will kill conversion rate.

^^Makes sense, I'll just try to build it up slow and steady. Man I'm getting killed this month though
I've sold 10 items to date.

Item 1 arrived broken, so I talked to buyer about returning it and sent her instructions on how to return it. Haven't heard back from them yet and its been about a week and a half.

Item 2 shipped out like normal, but got to the "shipped out for delivery portion" and hasn't arrived yet, even thought it's been about 4 days since. Talked to buyer and they'd like to wait and see, and if it doesn't come get a refund. Problem is, because i opened a refund on amazon for item 1, the only way i could get a refund on item 2 is to call customer service. Who would easily than see I'm dropshipping items.

Item 5 was out of stock on amazon in the color i posted, so I had to message buyer and ask if a different color was ok. They said 'sure' but the different color was priced a lot higher. So i ended up only making a '$0.01' profit exactly lol

Item 9 was purchased and than 5 minutes later, refund requested. Not a big deal but dissapointed I didn't get to keep the sale.

Item 10 was in stock, but shipping terms had changed to '3-5 week delivery'! No other amazon sellers even close to the price, so I had to dropship from Target. Only place I could find it was in stock in. Had to pay extra 10 bucks for shipping within my posted range, so another $5 lost. I have no clue about Target shipping either, so it could possibly include the price. Even though I selected the gift option.

A little burned out atm. More of a rant than anything, since i know you don't dropship from amazon

Only plus this month is my account got bumped up from a 300/6500 item limit to a 300/8500 limit. So I've got about $2000 worth to put more items up!

Well then you see why I keep saying that if you really want to make money on eBay long term as your job, keeping inventory yourself and shipping at least the good sellers is the way to go.

Once I've built up enough funds for this I'm definitely going this route. Just going to keep grinding till that point though, next big step in my plan is too purchase a stealth ebay account that can list 1000 items plus. That way I can really start to grow

@toml3030
Can you give some advice in regards to what tools do you use to find which products to sell, and where to get these products ?

I mean I know how I do my research but would love to hear from you about your process as you are obviously killing it :)

I suggest you read this thread in its entirety. Stop asking dumb questions.

Generally in my niche, once you show me a product I know exactly what my cost of production will be, and since my cost of production will be lower than 99.9% of the sellers, I know what I can sell at the requisite profit margin.

Hi Tom, is there any way for people living outside US to do this? I just cannot think of a way around the paypal money and paying for amazon. And people outside US cannot get a paypal debit card either. How can they pay from the money they have in paypal.

This thread isn't about the amazon/ebay arbitrage thing. Please read the thread.
