You could look into cloudflare for DDOS protection as well with liquidweb which I know can handle mass DDOS attacks for legal websites.

Are you hosting an HTTP server or? In that event cloudflare is by far the easiest solution. If you are getting massive HTTP requests from many IPs, most hosts will hardly protect you from that. You need either your own reverse proxy or use a public one such as cloudflare. I don't recommend setting up your own reverse proxy however, if you don't know what you're doing.

I'd go with cloudflare, they are better at blocking attacks while allowing the good visitors to pass through fine. No other DDoS protected hosting service can do that.

Cloudflare does help a ton but is really quite useless if the server behind cloudflare has no protection of it's own.

I have had no issues with using cloudflare, but for a host I would suggest OVH or Online.net they are both pretty good and I have not had any issues with either.
