Should I go for Black Hat?

My website was doing pretty good until the recent Google update. White Hat SEO is costing me more than Black Hat SEO. What will you suggest?

What recent Google update hurt you?

Do you need a sustainable site? Are you willing to lose your rankings/traffic permanently?

White Hat SEO isn't cheap - it's just the nature of the game. If you're losing traffic/rankings already then you might want to consider a different approach to white hat. If you're working with an agency or something you shouldn't be losing traffic... especially if you're spending a lot of money.

White Hat = No links. Everything is by Webmaster Rules. You can't build a web 2.0. You can pay another webmaster for a link. You cant ask for links. You cant post in a forum with your link in your signature. This is ALL link building. You cant do any of it.

Black Hat = Building or buying links in any context.

You are paying someone for black hat and they are lying to you and calling it 'white hat', which is not true in any extent of the words.

If you SPAM, a sub set of black hat, you may rank and tank. But more often than not, they last around a year. If you go more stable, and build higher quality and value links, you skate by.

Look for the best bang for your buck with the best SEO you can find. Anything else is garbage.

You don't have to worry about any Google Updates if you are doing white Hat SEO for your website. Which usually consists of brand mentions, citations, content etc. I agree with lightningblitz, someone is probably doing black hat Seo for your website.

Doing things "whitehat" is more expensive, and you get what you pay for - long term rankings. It does take time, and it is expensive. BH is riskier but the ROI is usually higher. It's all about choosing which game suits you better.
