Say I had a domain, some low competition keywords and a budget for content and link building .. How long would you say it is before this site (If it ever was to) started making money.

I have this idea in my head that it takes months, and possibly years before a site can start to make decent money.

What about you?

There are many things that you should consider, so it's not possible for someone to tell you directly. Let's say that you're doing proper link building and your site reaches the top. If it's not properly optimized for sales, you might not earn a penny. There where many cases that with a couple of changes on my site, the CTR and Conversion rates increased dramatically. So reaching the first page, doesn't necessarily mean that you'll earn money. What you do from that point one is what matters.

I understand all these, but let's say in the best case scenario .. Is it possible to rank, and get traffic within 2 months?

Invest money on that SEO method which will drive you traffic and goood ranking instantly.

I see some people rank their sites so fast. If the site rank fast, it will make money fast.

There is no defined answer. On Page SEO + proper backlinks with a good fluid flowing ratio could take several months to rank, if at all. I'd consistently setup sites in the same keyword range and see which ones rank better, then directly use the ones that don't rank well for either a PBN or a sales funnel later on.

Do proper white seo technique. It will take time but once you come on top, you will be able to hold that position for long time.

If you are actively adding content and backlinks on a regular basis, anything from 2-3 months (if the niche is too competitive then it might take more time)

Ah, ironical coz it is a black hat seo forum. ;)

Personally, I think black hat seo works quicker but for short term. White hat seo is hard work but lasts long time. Whatever you choose to do depends on your purpose. If you wanna sell it on flippa a couple of months later then I would say blackhat seo is fine. If you want to own it for long time then white hat seo is a better option

Slower than my friend

SEO is dead. At least that's what people are saying around here. :)

The way to go these days with seo is White Hat only. You can't get ranked a website anymore by just building backlinks with softwares, Google knows about this and surely has done something about it. However, it also depends of the niche. If you're in a niche where all the domains have only low quality backlinks then I don't think it would matter if you get some as well too. But if you're thinking of getting ranked in a niche/keyword of quality, then you can't get this done by only getting those free links. Always look at what your competitors has as backlinks and try to copy them.

The way to go now is only to build quality links and naturally. It's going to take a lot of time, I would say over 2-3 months and even more depending on your niche. Plus, you don't even get to see the results as fast in the old days. Google is doing more attention about those Internet Marketers who just wants to make money and won't give you the real rankings you should have after only a few months once you've passed the sandbox if you've just started building links. What I mean is that, if you're just starting out on a new website, you won't get to see your real results only after you've passed the sandbox.

Black hat is dead. You can't anymore just send free backlinks to your website and get it ranked in first page. You have to get quality and trusted backlinks.

The content that you have on your website is a lot important as well. Google wouldn't want to have a website with poor content which gives no values to the users to get ranked in first page.

So yeah, there has been a lot of changes these last years and these are only a few of the factors. Only a few persons today knows how to get this done. Google changes and you have to adapt your strategies, however once you do it, you profit big!

Don't give up, good things comes to those who works their ass off. Always look for more information and try to learn as much as you can. The more you can understand the better you can play the game.

One other thing, you have to be very, very patient if you're doing seo.

Good luck!

It all depends upon how quick you could rank your website. But making decent money could obviously take a while.

Did you done both black and white hat SEO perfectly without any mistake? Have you paid money for SEO? What tool you have used?
Once again you check your links.
