I started out selling software for developers via a 1-900 number. But it was too weird of an idea to last at the time (though I had a small arsenal of authors willing to give me a chance). Users would call the number and accept a phone charge as payment for the software. I then forwarded the payment to the developers for a small fee. I think the entire stint lasted for about a year before I gave up. People weren't willing to think outside of the box, and they insisted my little service was going to somehow deliver adult content.
