Depends on the website honestly.
What I can write, I write. I have six sites I am building. One has about 100K words on it. I wrote it all.
I have written about 50 articles total for the three sites in this thread.
I am out sourcing about 100 + Articles from Frank now.
I ordered 200 from another seller. Waiting for them and will review on the sellers thread.
So far, my content is the 'best' but each article takes me about thirty minutes to research, and twenty minutes to write. To get all of these sites up to size, I need help.
To be honest, I really like Frank's quality. Well researched (I ordered one of my sites from him, 100 articles, many of them I knew the content well, and the articles were done well.) and passed copy paste. So I approve.
It all comes down to what ranks, and what earns money. I need good information, high quality, and KW optimized as well as good on page.
I have tested a few services. I tossed some articles out. I would gladly pay 20 for a couple articles and find out they are not worth it. I know to never use them again.

Things are going well. I have 250 articles which should be incoming this week, and I will drip in.
One site with about 150 article is now being pushed with SEO. Massive amount of 2.0s have begun to drip in. I also have social signals drip in. I am replicating the 'viral effect' for this site. I should have have 300 articles up by the end of Feb.
This niche is not super deep. I have a lot of long tails but I primarily have 300 main KWs which have some long tail variants.
I did find an expired domain for 500 which has the SAME sort of content my site has, better lay out, all hand done coding on the way back machine. The articles were all 3K words plus.
I was considering taking the content, spinning it, and editing it to put on my site. The content was well done for SEO. Great on page, better than mind. The site also had a LOT of links. I also considered buying it and redirecting.
The problem is, having searched this niche and the KWs previously, I NEVER saw it in Google. They obviously knew SEO, it was a 'perfect' site which obviously has a lot of work done to it. I imagine they were penalized or did not make money with their method for income. I am too deep into this to reconsider. My only perk is my site looks cleaner, and has a better user experience. Less 'fluff' in articles. Although I outsourced a lot, this site had some pitfalls I knew from previous writing.
Readers do NOT care about the history of 'widgets' or how 'widget' designers pick what paint color to make them. Sure, some people do, but for a sales funnel people who research this want to know more about a product. They are NOT going to click ads. They do not want to buy anything. A site like this NEEDS an email list and to offer knowledge later. This means you need an entirely different method to make money, namely an email list and have a good product to sell later on or training. For some products, like 'widgets', you are not going to sell a product on this.
For an authority website, depending on the scope, is not about a single 'product', so this method is like a crap shoot for most sites. That is most likely why this website failed. I learned a LOT from checking this website out.
Some ramblings on SEO. SEO is like chess. I get the 'king and queen' analogy a lot on here. The problem is this is not poker. You KING, which is CONTENT, is NOT POWERFUL. It is your MOST important piece, without it you lose. But, the KING cannot take a piece. Your KING can't move on its own. Your KING can't win the GAME alone. SEO is a Game against SE's. Content IS KING.
Your Queen would be Back Links. It can move any where, do the heavy lifting, and next to your KING is your MOST USEFUL piece. You can win without a Queen. But it tends to be much harder. Some people rely upon the Queen too much, and lose it early by not protecting her. Your Knight, Rook, and Pawns are all fundamental pieces of chess. Social Signals, Press Releases, Shares, Guest Posts, etc. Pawns are your tiers. This is your low quality spam. You never want to lose an important piece, but you can lose a tier 2 without problem.
I think people get too caught up in 'Content is King' and you need to optimize better. You only need to be slightly better than your competition. SE's are incompetent until you draw their attention. Then they start playing more seriously. This is a Game of protecting your King and keeping your domain in the Game.

100k words on one site.. you could've just written a novel instead

I did write a novel. I have three books in the realm on Kindle ranging from 10k - 50k words. I am some what considered an authority. One of a few dozen, in that area. For something you are an 'expert' at and is hard for people to learn, you can pump out thousands of articles, or hundreds of several thousand word articles and still not cover everything.
The problem is, the books do not sell as well as you would think. This niche is flooded with a lot of different information on the same topics. A lot of the people are extremely cheap too. A few other elements are involved, but even after extensive selling of books, I only made 'XXX's' off of the books. A single client makes me XXX - XXXX for a single program.
That website is designed to give people nearly ALL of the information you need on the subject, but it is missing the magic touch you need a one on one for.
I started that site before I knew SEO. The on page is AWFUL. Lesson learned. When people find the site, they sign up for the newsletter and I get some long term clients. But it is time extensive with one on one coaching. That's why after I learned SEO fairly well (Learned Kindle promotion first, email marketing, click bank, then I moved to SEO) I decided a far less competitive niche, with the potential for more options to make money, would be ideal.
The 100K word site is so horribly optimized it would take at least a couple hundred hours to go over and work out. Then I would need to start SEO over again. Although when I make enough money with this journey to quit my 9 - 5, I will pick that site up again, re work it all, and try again. I have the knowledge and content, I just need to make it suitable to readers.
Eventually I want to scrap my custom website, move to wordpress, re - edit and optimize every article, and go from their.

Traffic, clicks on ads, and links have slowly started to trickle in. Only change for now, but it is something with a positive trend. That makes me happy.
Starting to dig deeper with KW research. Trying to find all good Long Tails. My goal for one of my sites is 500 pages by June.

How I Rank Sites
Amazingly enough, SEO is confusing to most people. Apart of any good journey, I decided to make a post
about how I rank sites, and plan to rank all sites I ever make.
Before anything, I want to suggest you get a good aged domain. And realize that the sandbox / link velocity / link waiting period has some merit. The best way to beat this is to be consistent with your link building and keep working.
1. Follow all onsite SEO Guides...
On site IS the single most important parts of ranking a site I do. Some more important elements:
- Interlinking that looks natural.
- Low KW Density (Under 3%)
- 1K + Words per article for medium to high difficulty KW
- 500 + KW for easy difficulty KWs.
Some distinctions I want to make about building your site. Content carries the weight of the site. Google is smart, we all know that. You do not need to spam a KW. Have it in the text a couple times and ensure you write articles which will help who visits your sites. That is the focus
No site is ever a 'Micro Niche' or 'Authority'. A site either covers multiple topics and related questions or a few. A site should always naturally expand into what we consider 'Authority' with over 100 - 500 articles. You need to keep building content all the time.
2. Building Links.
When ever I build links, I mix it up. I want some 'low quality', some 'blog posts' some 'PBN', a few EDU/GOV. This is to mimic natural.
When ever I build links, I keep adding content to make it look natural. In addition, I need to justify the links. You should not spam links if you site has 5 articles with 500 words each. It does not make sense.
The real power of how I rank sites is this back linking strategy.
Web 2.0s.
Parasites, Web 2.0s, PBNs are all variations of the same thing. It is a buffer in the form of a blog to funnel links through to give juice to your main site.
A good Pyramid has a tier one of some form of web 2.0. With other, lesser quality links pointed to the 2.0.
I prefer a handful of high quality 2.0s as my foundation for all sites. You could call these 2.0s a PBN. You can re use a good 2.0 for multiple sites. Once it has some juice, it is good to go.
Velocity matter with link building. I get a few high quality links up, then I start a steady stream of links. It does not matter if you have ten links a month or ten thousand. Natural is a steady stream and that is how I rank.
I prefer three or four tiers when building links. Tier one are always high quality web 2.0s. As aforementioned, I filter in other stuff to look natural.
Tier two is often automated web 2.0s. A lot of them. Exact match KWs. I want to power up my high quality 2.0s with quality.
Tier three is what most people consider tier two. Blog Posts, Wiki Links, Edus, Govs, PBN, SAPE, anything will work. It is not GSA spam. I prefer 'higher quality' on even my tier three. I make my 2.0s my own little PBN.
Tier four is my spam. I hit it with anything and everything. Fiverr, SEO Clerks, GSA Blast, Xrummer Blast, anything.
Each of the sites I am building in this journey are all adventures in practice. One site has a normal three tier link strategy with 2.0s. One will use Parasites. I will play with things. In general, I prefer four tiers and I re use the tier one for different projects.
Keep in mind, I like variety. Although I use the same thing, I make sure I use some type of variation with low quality junk in moderation.
3. Social Signals.
I think in terms of justification when building links. I keep adding content the entire time to make it look like my site is growing and getting links because it provides quality information. I also use the same strategy with Social Signals.
Before I played a smaller game. I would get a tweet service to blast my site to 'real' followers.
I have used a variety of social providers. Now I am stepping up my game and used a higher velocity of social signals dripped over 30 days as I build my links to kick my site into gear.
I want some signals to justify the links. I repeat myself because my goal is to look natural. Natural means for every few links, I get some social signals.
4. Niche Interaction.
My final step, last thing I do, are Facebook Groups, Forum Interaction, and Fan Pages. This is drive traffic to my site and also, justify links by real interaction with my target audience.
Niche interaction can include buying ads. I have done it on Facebook and Adwords. Again, it all looks natural if I start getting traffic from Facebook while I have a Fan Page and have been pimping my site in Face Book groups.
5. Enjoy the rankings.
This is nothing revolutionary. My biggest site I 'ranked' before I knew SEO a year ago. I used the same strategy, but in a larger scale. I have nearly 10K links pointed directly at my money site now, and I have not been hit. The reason? It looks natural. 1K links are from forum interaction. 1K are from social media blasting and interaction. It all looks like people liked my site.

An Authority Site is a Massive site which is respected in its niche and completely covers many topics within a niche.
So far today:
Posted 15 lower word count articles.

I will then be branching out to long tail kws with all longer articles.
This may seem crazy to have my primary articles at 500 words for the main KWs. The problem is, most of my 'information' is covered to death with a variety of information by other 'authority' websites. In fact, for many of my KWs, websites like Web MD and other Authority sites cover the top 10.
I am a realist, this site will not make money off of the primary profitable KWs. It will make money with long tail KWs. This site will not make me stable income for six months, end of March is month three. By then, I will be switching over to the long tail, more profitable KWs which will rank easier because the rest of my site, with high competition, will have SEO done.
A question for those who have success with authority sites:
When do you start making revenue?
With previous ventures I bought most of my traffic and drummed it up from forums and social media. This is relatively new to me.

I played with my site map. I continued to have some errors and google was not playing nice. So I found a better site map and uploaded it. Now waiting for google.
I upped the velocity of articles recently. I plan to put ten up a day for the next ten days, bringing me to over 300. At this point I should, hopefully, start to make money.
The site is nearly 45 days old.

Plugging away still. Playing with good content. Have over 210 articles up. Milestone for me. Lots of work, learning, and outsourcing.
I can easily have over 500 Articles on the site I am focusing on by my six month goal. That is exciting. I am trying to cover every major KW in my niche (All of which are Long Tail to begin with) and expanding this from that point. I should have over 400 just for the main KWs before I expand to pick up more traffic.
Nothing in ranking on the main site yet. Must be due to the fact I had google crawl errors with my site map and not really much notable link building done yet.
Two other sites hae 40 articles. Site four, the smallest, has ten.
It is hard to juggle four sites at once at an infant stage. I am focusing my effort on one site primarily so I can start getting traction off of it so I can then avert my attention to other sites.

210 articles are enough to start link building now, fix up the sitemap and get some link building started. Start with basic stuff directories, bookmarks, forums, social signals and then move towards web 2.0's and PBN links. You have alot of content people would be interested in exchanging guest post with you.

Waiting on an order of 2.0s and got some Wiki's and some edu and govs. I have 100 natural links already, which is pretty amazing. I have done manual Q and A stuff to look natural and I am looking to buy some forum profile now. You pretty much hit my back link strategy on the head.
Of course, new site and all, takes a bit to rank. But with so much 'Quality' content, and I am only going to be ramping up the quality content for long tails, I think the big site will soon start making money with a little push.

Work. Work. Work.
Some random things.
1. For my first 'big site' I have known for a while I need to re-luanch it. Stip content down, re - post it. It is not SEO optimized. The site is on the back burner though. I am more inclined to jump into it this weekend. It will not take super long to copy and paste and change formatting.
2. I have a few Kindle books in my niche for my main site. In the past I have done moderate SEO Campaigns on them. Nothing amazing. Well, I decided to turn up the volume and run them as full blown Parasites. 5K Random links. Just a test. I sell these products via my niche, so I really don't care if they get any negative results.
3. The big authority site is at 245 posts. Making money? No. Site is STILL an infant in terms of what I want it to get to and its potential. I think around three months of some link building (10 a day ish) I should have enough traction to get the ball rolling. I also got some more redirected domains in the pipeline to power the site up. I can do links all day but I am lacking real authority because they were brand new domains.
4. On one of the smaller sites (50 articles) I redirected two good domains to them which relate in the niche. Each has some good links (High Authority Domains) on them. This will give me a boost.
The hardest part of this all is juggling a 9 - 5, a Girlfriend (Will marry her, sooner if IM really takes off as she has offered financial support despite the fact I make FAR more than her) and 4 'baby authority' sites in the works. It is a mess. Once I quit my 9 - 5, hopefully at journeys end, I will only be working 20 hours a week. Which will be AMAZING!
Some random things.
1. For my first 'big site' I have known for a while I need to re-luanch it. Stip content down, re - post it. It is not SEO optimized. The site is on the back burner though. I am more inclined to jump into it this weekend. It will not take super long to copy and paste and change formatting.
2. I have a few Kindle books in my niche for my main site. In the past I have done moderate SEO Campaigns on them. Nothing amazing. Well, I decided to turn up the volume and run them as full blown Parasites. 5K Random links. Just a test. I sell these products via my niche, so I really don't care if they get any negative results.
3. The big authority site is at 245 posts. Making money? No. Site is STILL an infant in terms of what I want it to get to and its potential. I think around three months of some link building (10 a day ish) I should have enough traction to get the ball rolling. I also got some more redirected domains in the pipeline to power the site up. I can do links all day but I am lacking real authority because they were brand new domains.
4. On one of the smaller sites (50 articles) I redirected two good domains to them which relate in the niche. Each has some good links (High Authority Domains) on them. This will give me a boost.

About 80% is outsourced with manual review and editing. I am not going to lie.
I am 'dumping' a lot of time and cash into this. I figure if I spend 50 hours a week at a 9 - 5 and have an extra grand a month to play with, why not invest into this? I don't have the time to write, so I might as well kick this in the ass.
If I had the time, I would be writing. I don't, so I whore out my content. When I do write, on my off days, I pump out at least 10 high quality articles in 4 hours, with research and over 1K words. Or I can pay my writer 5 for 1K words, well researched, and save the hassle.
I make sure every day I have at least 5 articles going up on the main site. That cots me 30 per day minimum for 'great quality' and some filler will cost me 15 a day. I wont rank without back links for at least a couple months. My content is not revolutionary, but its good. So while I wait for my back links to index and get me traction, I might as well post up content!
I think a lot of journey threads have guys going 1/2 ass for 2 weeks and quitting, while posting up some great graphics and notes. I want to put anything and everything I can into this. I learn, outsource, write, and optimize every day.
Work is how you get success. I just wish I found BHW in 2009.

Old host kept me off line quite a bit. I finally got it switched over to Power Up Hosting. Problem is I couldnt update for the last few days. Put me behind a bit.
I have 100 articles to drip in.
KW Research thus far:
I have one article per 'good' KW in the pipeline to put out. Now I am switching over to Keyword Shitter to flush things out for the rest of my site. Easy to rank for low comp KWs is the new goal from here on out. It is all about getting traction.

Almost at 300 Articles. 100 Articles in the pipeline for this site.
I have MASSIVE link building going on and am working on MORE social signals. If someone sells SOCIAL SIGNALS and can DRIP A SIGNAL or TWO or REAL SIGNALS a DAY for over 300 URLS at a CHEAP PRICE. Let me know. I am looking for more justification with a share or two per article per day for a few months. I can drop a little money at that.
I will have 5 K links done for this site in two months, then I plan to PING them in slowly, over 90 days.
My Anchor ratio is okay. I have a CRAP TON of diversity, but NOT ENOUGH RAW OR GENERIC. I need to fix this. Nearly everything is a KW. Although it is all LOW PERCENTAGES. It has me worried.
I should start to MAKE BANK off of the big site by the end of April. No doubt. Then I switch gears, keep dripping an article a week, and focus on site two / three / four.
Once I make SOME off of one site, it is ALL reinvesting. I want to re - invest like a champ until my dead line of June, not spending any of the revenue on anything but expanding. Got to make it with this journey.
