Google To Have a New Competitor?

There have been dozens of "Google competitors" in the past and none of them have really made a difference *coughchachacough* - all with their own unique ideas on how to sort/present information.

Wolfram looks cool and sounds cool, but until it proves its worth come launch day, I don't really have much faith in it.

What exactly makes this new engine so special? There is no catch-line. People need a clear and concise reason to switch from Google to this.

I imagine it will get a boost when it launches just from word-of-mouth, and then it will fizzle latter in the year.

Look how long it took google to get where it is today. You really think anything that is released today would be a competitor straight away? Dont think so...it would take years imo

It only took about 5 years for google to go public on an IPO. It really took them just a year to oust MSN, Altavista, and Yahoo as the number one search engine.

Here's the thing, many things in life and especially on the internet are SUBJECTIVE, it's people's version of the truth or their way of seeing it.
How can Wolfthingy determine that?
I mean, long ago I used to think that wikipedia was the gospel and everything was true, then I started hanging out with people like you all and found out it's half made up half bull.

Last but not least, think of branding. Are you going to say to your wife: "just wolfram it honey!!"

People said the same about google. I remember I had a friend who said google's front page looked stupid because they didn't have pictures, news, and categories on the home page like Yahoo.

there is no way that anything just entering the market could compete with a brand-established company like Google.

Wolfram and Mathematica isn't new, the Mathematica Language come out in the 80's on floppy disks and the Wolfram company was formed around the same time.

So while them doing the internet search engine thing is new, everything behind it is very advanced. I mucked around with Mathematica many years ago and it's seriously powerful stuff.

I wish them well, and i hope they resist any kind of buyout or partnership from Google.

I also think the name Wolfram Alpha is quite catchy - its got technological, scientific, inteligence type connotations to it.

I doubt Wolfram Alpha can be seen as a search engine. I think its more of a "filtered" information resource.
Its something you would use if you wanted to find when the last volcano erupted on Mt Vesuvius... NOT to find different types of shoes to buy.
It is just an advanced version of an encyclopaedia. Its like Brittanica online getting better technology to answer different questions.

As humans, we are accustomed to choice...how will you feel when your are given information from one source and not given a few other sources to verify it.

This will change nothing for google...it simply means Google can look over its shoulder to get an idea of something it could incorporate into its own search engine. You might see a small snippet inserted by google to give users a choice to see its own version similar to what wolfram spurts out.

Oh..and the Media publicity bears a stark resemblance to "Cuil.com" when it launched just over 7 months ago. See where it is now...I think even BHW has a better Alexa ranking.

As far as Online marketing is concerned. Wolfram will be a new source to copy content and paste it on our sites.

Wolfram Alpha is not a brandable name at all IMO.
