There was an article at Wired called the mathematics of Ebola. Basically if the darn thing contaminates more than 1 people on average, it'll spread quickly.

Ebola is spreading at an average of 2. That means by january 2015 there may be over 1 million infections. Within 6 months it could reach all humankind.

Obviously that's not gonna happen cuz I'm immune to this shit. Now excuse me I need to find some whiskey.

It's super unlikely that an epidemic will occur in any developed country with a high quality health care system.

But for nations in West Africa like Liberia and Sierra Leone it's devastating and will probably only get worse. That's where the 1,000,000 infections will be.

Lol I had the swine flu, it was just like the common cold but lasted a bit longer, but the only thing about ebola is it was at a 90% mortality rate, currently it's at %60, hopefully this vaccine works out. personally I want a cool rage virus like in 28 days later or world war z, being human or zombie, it would still be fun xD hahaha

Yep, people have a tendency to panic for nothing.

I was living in Hong Kong when SARS hit and for weeks I (and every other expat) was getting panicked calls from friends and family around the world. They were watching the news and assuming the worst.

In HK, we (expats) were just going about our lives as normal, not giving anything a second thought.

The only impact was on business trips - at one point anyone with a slight cold or sniffle was in danger of not being allowed to fly because of panicked entry restrictions in the destination countries.

I did use the hysteria amongst the locals to my advantage though - every time I took public transport I used to fake a big sneeze and sniff, which resulted in having several seats to myself
