Is Blog Commenting Harmful?

No it's not, as long as you comment on-topic on niche relevant blogs with low # of obl (preferably moderated blogs), and your comment actually make sense.

If you are using for your money site then you should make sure that the OBL is low and if you can write good on topic comments then you can even get good links from authority blogs too which are usually moderated.

You can also follow your competitors to check if they use any blog comments.

Link is Link, Its not harmful if you do it the right way.

Dont spam your link on the comment, find a related postand comment your link if the article is related or if your link will help their future readers.

Has to look natural. All comments should be related to the article, and a good percentage should be on the topic of your site. This is just in case of a manual review. OBL also has to be quite low to avoid spam filters. Half the internet community does this type of linking so Google can't punish them.

Comments are relevant only when the site where you put it has no more than 15/20 outbound links.
Most important thing it's the topic and this have to be the same of your site, closer is better
Google is considering really low quality all comments' links because are easy to obtain.

most of the comments are no follow, so it doesn't matter anyway
No follow can make better ranking! Google certainly consider this type of link and transfers the value in each case.
The real dilemma is to understand how much

Blog comments are still in play if you structure them right. No follow links are important for link diversity.

That's true, if you have only follow links Google know that it's artificial structure. It's the same as for keywords diversify, for link building you've to do follow, no follow and social links to make them legin looking.

Answer is "NO", if you use it correctly. Blog comments is the positive thing for the site that boost up to hold good place in SERP. Use it in the right way, it is one method in SEO that many follow this. The obl links in the comments are good for the site and do use limited obl links.

Blog commenting is not harmful, but you should not over do it, make sure that you are posting comments to sites relevant to your niche and make the right comments that make sense, because many sites have moderators on their comments section.

Bad and good links are hardly identified by their classification as blog comments, contextual links, profile links etc. Though in content high pr links are considered to be the best ones, yet i have often seen better blog comments than incontent pr links.

As many people above said, its all about doing it correctly. Try to find pages that are related to your niche, already have very low obl and have rare chances of getting spammed to death in near future , comment and you have a good blog comment link.

Blog commenting is not harmful if you do comment on niche relevant site and write fresh comment for each site, but it'll not much beneficial for your moneysite at this stage, because its old technique now.

i ranked few easy niche websites just with well written/ on point /low obl /moderated /from high pr or pa/da websites only.

Hey, what is your roughly success rate getting these comments approved?

if you contribute to site owner and your comments are high quality and give value both to article writer and readers, why the hell they should be rejected? I always take time to understand the article, so my comments are always on point, and surely at least 150 words long. So my hand written comments basically always get approved and stick for lifetime.
Actually if you put efforts and time into commenting you can get decent return, both in direct traffic and link juice. This is good (additional) linking practice that work well for me.

Anytime you actually participate in your niche online, it will be good for your site. Blog comments aren't golden links, they are more like brass links.

Brass is not as valuable as gold, but it does have value.
