Is Google Really Smart?

Is Google really smart as it pretend to be? Google says that it only rank high quality websites, but how some nasty website rank on Google.

Upon searching for "cash for gold" on google.ca one website rank on 6th-7th. This is a highly competitive keyword. When I search on google with "domain.com", this website is even not in search result and when I searched as "cash for gold site:domain.com" Google does not show even any result.

This is how Google measure the quality of a website?

Yeah, Google is as smart as it appears, although some webmasters do find ways to get to the top of Google for their target keywords without following the guidelines, which makes Google appear stupid.

Google is a company, made up of people and I would imagine that the collective intelligence of the people that work there is pretty high. Google isn't perfect and when you're working with highly complex algorithms, nothing will every work perfectly.

Software is a funny thing to make because all people see if the little box that you type into and to them, that is the product.

If what you are wanting to do somehow defrauds them - or appears to in THEIR eyes - they will eventually stop you.

The guys at google are clever but slow at catching you, so if you know what you are doing you will get a few weeks before they do. During which time those "nasty websites" as you put it - just look to rank and bank before they get shutdown.

Then they repeat the process over and over.

You could reverse engineer the links and see that end of things for starters... that will give you an idea.

Google is not as smart as they like you to believe they are if you followed their blog, but are smarter than some other SEOs give them credit for.

Google is really smart service but there are some situations when bing or other search engines may provide better results. That is one of the reasons why other search engines still exist.

Ever heard of manual checks? They have special employees that check the top 10 for high search volume keywords and if they spot a crap site within it (which was obviously brought up with blackhat techniques), they simply remove it by hand.

I already checked the website's backlinks, but did not find much backlink. What you mean by "reverse engineer"? Can you please explain me?

I believe that Google system is not perfect... so its algorithm always improved and updated... for fighting spamming. So Google is always getting smarter. You must adjust Google's updates from time to time.

That keyword is not even near competitve on google.ca, check top domain, you can be in top5 with few backlinks.

Are you really "outsmarting" Google if you temporarily rank your site and then get de-indexed?

But back to your point, Google has a strong track record for penalizing these types of sites. Rap Genius is a case study that comes to mind first.
