Do you really know bitcoin? Here are 11 myths

While there were plenty of other big surprises in 2013, no business story likely was more unique than bitcoin, the online simulated currency that threatened to shake up the global monetary system.

Debate raged over bitcoin's legitimacy: Was it just a playful creation of hobbyists, or a new exchange medium brought about as a logical reaction to profligate currency manipulation from the world's central banks?

Nick Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx, was one of the early Wall Street analysts to take a serious look at bitcoin back in February. To wrap up 2013, he examined what he sees as 11 myths surrounding the subject.

1. Bitcoin is huge For all the talk and hype, bitcoin is tiny with a total value of just USD 10.8 billion. That compares to the total stock of US dollar at USD 800 billion, Colas said in a report. There's also about USD 4 trillion in global currency traded every day. (Read more: What you need to know about digital currencies)

2. Bitcoin enables drugs and terrorism Colas argues that bitcoin is "way too volatile" for the average drug dealer or terrorist. That's not to say that "some enterprising dealers" don't use it, but if it was widespread Colas contends its value would be "USD 10,000 or higher" compared to Friday morning's trading value of about $800.

3. Bitcoin is a currency This is perhaps the most contentious observation, as bitcoin is often referred to as a "cryptocurrency." Colas offers that bitcoin is "a system much more than a 'currency'" in which holders agree to take part in a transaction of value. Banking analyst Dick Bove may have been more to the point, where in a recent analysis he called bitcoin a "low-cost replacement for credit cards and other payment mechanisms." There are virtually no costs involved with bitcoin transactions, as opposed to wire transfers, for instance.

4. Bitcoin has never been more volatile than now Untrue, according to a chart Colas prepared analyzing bitcoin's one-month returns and standard deviation. It actually was more volatile in May 2011, before most people even had heard of bitcoin. (Read more: Behind China's love affair with bitcoin)

5. Chinese citizens can't buy bitcoins BTC China has been one of the most dominant exchanges for bitcoin, with nearly 10 million transactions over the past month, according to bitcoincharts. That's despite a government ban on financial institutions handling such transactions.

6. Bitcoin is not a store of value This is an expression often given to gold and silver, and Colas said it does not apply to bitcoin. "Bitcoin may one day prove it deserves to sit alongside those assets," he said. "It isn't there yet."

7. Bitcoin is untraceable Bitcoin transactions happen online. Enough said. (Though Colas does offer: "If you think anything you do online is secret, I can't help you.")

8. Losing anonymity will render bitcoin useless Conversely, traceability doesn't dim bitcoin's allure, which is really in its low or no-cost transactions. (Read more: Big US online retailer to accept Bitcoin)

9. It's a Ponzi scheme No, it isn't. Ponzi schemes have no other intent than to defraud. There's no evidence to suggest that bitcoin is in the same boat, despite the strong price volatility and attraction for speculators. The Federal Reserve has noted the "potentially significant positive social value" of bitcoin, Colas noted.

10. Bitcoin is "ready for prime time" No, it isn't. As Bove, Colas and numerous others have pointed out, bitcoin won't get legit until price volatility gets tamped down and a truly safe, mainstream storage place emerges. Colas suggests banks, Paypal or Apple come up with a storage device.

11. Something better will kill bitcoin This one doesn't get so much play, but it's worth considering. Bove has contended that being first gives bitcoin a tremendous competitive advantage, and Colas echoes that point. "There are other online money transfer products out there, of course, and more to come," he said. "The challenges will be the same for all of them: security, utility and legal compliance."

The quest to meet those challenges likely means bitcoin remains a serious story for 2014.

"I absolutely understand why there are so many bitcoin haters out there. But don't hate the player; hate the game," Colas said. "Technology is a tremendously disruptive force in society, and it knows no boundaries. It disturbs every status quo. That's what is does. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that you can reverse it by calling it a bubble."

[h=1]A Year In Bitcoin: Why We'll Still Care About The Cryptocurrency Even If It Fades[/h]
It's been up, it's been down, but one thing's for sure: it's changed how we think about currency.

In mid-December 2013, Bitcoin took one of its most dramatic nosedives yet. Following a crackdown on yuan-to-bitcoin deposits in China, the price of one bitcoin dropped below as $540, less than half of its all time high in late November, $1,242. (It's since bounced back to around $730.)
Bitcoin's true believers aren't treating its latest gyrations as a cause for panic. It's not the first time Bitcoin crashed hard, and it's not going to be the last. But it's a further reminder, in case you needed one, that Bitcoin is volatile, and what it's supposedly worth today may bear no relation whatsoever to what it'll be worth tomorrow.
It's been a big year for Bitcoin, the unlikely currency that started as a fad for cryptology nuts and ended as a mainstream obsession that had many of us all closely following its rollercoaster highs and lows. But the biggest impact of Bitcoin so far has not nothing to do with its actual value. Rather, the year of Bitcoin we've just been through has fundamentally changed the way we think about money.
[h=2]Growing Legitimacy[/h] In 2013, Bitcoin's hold on the mainstream was undeniable. Even the most Luddite media organizations could no longer ignore the popular cryptocurrency. Each time Bitcoin crashed—first in April; then, after the Feds cracked down on Mt. Gox; and once more, after the Feds closed illicit marketplace Silk Road—it soon came back stronger than ever.
As mainstream coverage grew, an increasing number of small businesses hurried to accept Bitcoin, in part because it requires far lower transactions fees than credit or debit payments. On this year's Bitcoin Black Friday, held the same day as regular Black Friday but with Bitcoin, nearly 300 merchants participated. BitPay, which processes Bitcoin transactions for business, processed more than 6,000 plus transactions in a single day and called it the most popular day in the history of Bitcoin commerce.
On January 1, 2013, the price of a single Bitcoin was $13.51. As the price fluctuated into the thousands over the course of the year, speculation drove the price and coverage into a frenzy.
Stories of Bitcoin millionaires, who'd found forgotten, unspent wallets of the cryptocurrency, only spurred an increasing number of newbies. When I bought Bitcoin in person, my seller told me that the higher Bitcoin's profile, the more beginners enter the community.
"The membership [of the Bitcoin Users' Group] probably has a mathematical correlation between the number of attendees and the price of Bitcoin," he said.
In an age where people fetishize technology and convenience, banks are one of the stodgiest parts of our infrastructure. Bitcoin appealed to people who don't see why we should still wait over the weekend for a bank to process a transaction, or why the government can deny your donation to Wikileaks. At its most successful, Bitcoin changed our global conception of what makes up a currency.
[h=2]Why Bitcoin Can't Do It Alone[/h] However, for all the strides Bitcoin has made forward, 2013 has also shown that world governments can easily squelch the currency's growth.
Proponents of Bitcoin are drawn to the cryptocurrency because it was designed to act outside of any governing body's jurisdiction. Unlike dollars or yuan, which are printed and controlled by governments, bitcoins are mined by their users. And thanks to the blockchain, a ledger of every bitcoin transaction that has ever taken place, there's no mystery about how many there are or where they've been. Bitcoins are private, but they aren't secret.
But, if you're not mining bitcoins yourself, you need to acquire them by exchanging government currency at a Bitcoin exchange such as Mt. Gox, Bitstamp, or BTC China. And when government money is involved, government cooperation is required.
Bitcoin got its biggest wake-up call in mid-December, when the People's Bank of China froze yuan-to-bitcoin deposits to China's largest Bitcoin exchange. The price plummeted.
Bitcoin has every ability to recover if BTC China is able to come to a compromise with the PBOC. Unfortunately, China isn't the only country that has rejected Bitcoin as a currency. Germany, France, Korea, and Thailand have all looked unfavorably on Bitcoin. The European Banking Authority, Switzerland, Poland, and the U.S. are still undecided. Even if Bitcoin isn't in their hands, their decisions on cash-to-bitcoin transfers could affect its future.
The U.S. indecision has already caused difficulty for Bitcoin ATMs and vending machines. While a Robocoin ATM for bitcoins is operating in Canada and a Lamassu bitcoin vending machine is now functional in Finland, neither maker has yet complied with necessary U.S. financial regulations. The companies blame the lengthy regulatory process.
In October, the first U.S. client to buy a Lamassu obtained legal counsel and began the process of registering as a money transmitter, but is still caught up in legal limbo. The Senate's November Bitcoin hearings helped to improve Bitcoin's standing with lawmakers, but still proved only that government regulation is inevitable.
And at its worst, Bitcoin has given lawmakers reasons to question it. According to a 2013 users' survey, 16 percent of Bitcoin spending went toward narcotics and other illegal goods. A Bitcoin assassination market has popped up to target world leaders—so far, fortunately, without any result. (Though you know the Secret Service must be taking a keen interest in that.)
Bitcoin has been accused of being a bubble, but it doesn't exist in one. Outside factors could easily bring it to its knees.
[h=2]The Legacy Of Bitcoin[/h] 2014 may not see the end of Bitcoin, but it will certainly see the end of Bitcoin as we know it.
Soaring valuations have made Bitcoin more of an investment asset than a transactional currency. Why spend your Bitcoin if it's just going to increase in value the next day? And indeed, whether they're being hoarded or lost, a full 64 percent of bitcoins have never been spent.
This just makes crashes like the mid-December one all the more upsetting to investors. Bitcoin has little intrinsic value and is backed chiefly by people's belief in it. If that belief were to falter, investors would be left with nothing.
If you read Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper on Bitcoin, it's apparent that today's inflated bitcoin-as-investment model is never what the anonymous founder(s) intended. Bitcoin was designed to be a peer-to-peer cash system with no third party arbitrator. Bitcoin wasn't designed to be an investment asset, and it won't last as one.
According to Andreas Antonopoulos, founder of cryptocurrency company RootEleven, many of Bitcoin's staunchest supporters believe Bitcoin is in for a change, and that's not a bad thing.
Even if Bitcoin as a currency experiences more crises, he said, the invention of the blockchain—the universally shared record of all Bitcoin transactions—can support future currencies and other applications, forever changing the global culture of money.
"A trans-national currency without borders, without government interference and without political controls is now possible. As more people become aware of this, it changes the relationship between money and the state, money and individuals and eventually between individuals and their government. Bitcoin as an invention will survive even if Bitcoin the first currency fails."
In this reporter's opinion, Bitcoin itself won't last. But the innovations that Bitcoin has brought to our financial transactions—increased privacy, a public ledger, censorship-free cash and freedom from a stodgy third party—are what it will truly be remembered for. Years later, when we're using the latest and most stable digital currency yet, these inventions will still be going strong.
No matter what happens in 2014, Bitcoin has already left its mark. The cryptocurrency is not without its many flaws, but it has brought one major success: our concept of what a currency is has changed forever.
Update at 10:30 EST: an earlier version of this article misquoted Andreas Antonopoulos. The corrected quote is live now.

You guys have no real understanding. Will bitcoin go down? The answer is a clear no.The bullshit posts that government will try to limit it is just nonsense.
It was nobody else but the NSA who created bitcoin which was later confirmed by Snowden.Digital currency is the wet dream of bankers and also an economical weapon to push uncontrolled money to china which is basicly the reason why the chinese government stopped the uncontrolled money exchange to protect its currency and domestic market.
If you guys would have a minimal knowledge about real economics you would know that the western establishment is trying to flood china with worthless USD to take over china like they did with russia in the early 90's .Chinese know that and thats the reason for their extrem money flow control system so there wont be any buyout or currency manipulation which isnt planned by the chinese government.

You guys really need to learn to do your homework instead of posting nonsense

[h=1]I Strip for Bitcoin[/h]
Confession: When I hear "Bitcoin" mentioned in conversation at work or a party (and it comes up more and more lately) I nod knowingly and quickly shove food in my mouth in hopes that no one calls me out on my utter ignorance: I have no idea what Bitcoin is. So I took it upon myself to find out. I learned that it's a digital currency, not a tangible thing, that it's independent of government regulation, and that its exchange rate to the US dollar is super-volatile. I also learned that it's accepted in some surprising places, like on Overstock.com and Reddit, the glorified Internet bulletin board, where people are trading the high-tech currency for everything from Swahili language translations to stripping. Yes, stripping.
Here, one Bitcoin stripper tells her story. The 27-year-old, who wished to remain anonymous, shares how she got into swapping pics of "her naughty bits" (to crib a Reddit phrase) for digital currency—a growing-by-the-second trade that relies, largely, on total amateurs like her.
The weird thing is that this all started because I was interested in Bitcoin, not because I was interested in stripping. I discovered Bitcoin about six months ago and wanted to invest some of my own cash in it, but I hesitated. Then one day I was poking around Reddit—I've been going there for years just to consume news and headlines— and I found /r/Jobs4Bitcoins, which is where anyone can post anything from web design services to lawn mowing to even just filming themselves doing something embarrassing, and people will pay them for it with Bitcoin. From there, I stumbled across /r/GirlsGoneBitcoin and had a sort of "aha!" moment.

I would never have considered stripping, doing web cam shows, or any other type of sexy photography before that. But when I read the guidelines—I never have to show my face—and realized I could protect my identity, I got kind of into it. I've got a boyfriend, though, and I wanted everything to be above board with him, so I tested the waters there first. When I showed him and he screamed "Let's do it!" I pretended like I was too shy and he had to convince me, but really that wasn't the case. I wanted to do it all along. GirlsGoneBitcoin seemed like a perfect way to get invested in Bitcoin without tying any real currency up, and it seemed kinda fun.
Related: How to Seal the Deal with Online Dating
I've only been verified on GirlsGoneBitcoin for about two weeks—you have to get verified to be able to accept Bitcoin—but in that time I've received probably $400 USD. It's tough to tell looking back since it's in Bitcoin and the exchange rate varies drastically. But it's a lot of money, and I've been saving it all. Every bit.

From what I've seen, I'd guess hardly any of the girls on GirlsGoneBitcoin have any sort of stripping or porn background. Just like myself, it seems like college girls who don't quite wanna get up on that pole, but still wanna leverage their assets when it's convenient and safe for them. And it is, mostly, safe and convenient. I haven't had any scary experiences. I think because it's still relatively small, there isn't much of that yet. If it goes more mainstream, then naturally that will come with the territory. Obviously you're worried about someone figuring out who you are in real life, but Reddit does a good job with their verification process, which makes you slow down and take the necessary precautions before jumping in the deep end.
Related: The Sexual Fantasy Lives of Men
Also, Reddit's moderators absolutely help out with policing things. There was one case recently where a group was trying to identify one of the girls, and the admins immediately and permanently banned them all from the site. And beyond that, they don't even allow any type of derogatory comments, even the ones that are meant as compliments but could definitely be worded a little nicer. If they see things like that, they take them down.

It's nice knowing that there's someone watching out for our safety and identities, because I do worry about my privacy all the time despite the fact that I never show my face on camera. My boyfriend and I have a young son and neither of us would ever want him to see his mom show up on the Internet in this fashion, so we take lots of precautions. For one, all e-mail correspondence (which is just for sign ups and Bitcoin transactions, never communication with another Reddit user) is done under an alias. My screenname and web cam name on Reddit are obviously fake and tied to my alias e-mail. My age, height, weight, location, etc. are all misleading. Even to the point that when I say, "Hey I'll be on cam at 12pm EST," I'm not even in that time zone!
I also never go on camera without my boyfriend in the same chat room on an alias of his own, which always changes so no one connects the dots. It's important that he's in the loop 100%, both to protect us, but also to keep our relationship transparent.
And in that way, it's actually been fun! My boyfriend and I are enjoying it beyond the money part. We're pretty normal people: We live in a great community, where I go to college full time and my boyfriend has a great career. At home, I'm an excellent mom and neither of us drinks or does any drugs. But whenever we have a little spare time, we jump online and make some Bitcoin. It's a good thing, and it actually has made our already great relationship that much more exciting. I can go online be anyone I want to be. Which, right now, is someone who just organized a deal with a guy who will pay the Bitcoin equivalent $100 USD for a pretty short video where I don't show my face or anything.
