Feds Shut Down Pirate Bay

ThePirateBay may be shut down, but it is yet a portal. The entire torrent database from TPB fits in less than half a GB (not including comments/descriptions). Torrents are hosted on everyone's computer that is seeding the file. Like one big network. Hell, I have a thumb drive with TPB's torrent list on my desk right now. All I have to do is enter the magnet link, and it starts downloading.

They will never be able to stop piracy simply because people want it. There are multiple ways of sharing files.

The world is still a "Slaughter House" and they are worrying about a few harmless Digits??

oh wait totally forgot: money rules

Also keep in mind that the entertainment industry lawyers have a revolving door relationship with the US Justice department, that has accelerated durng the Obama years (similar to how drug company executives and lobbyists slide into positions as bureaucrats at the FDA, then write regulations that benefit the drug industry). RIAA/MPAA lawyers become DOJ lawyers, and incorporate their lobbying agendas into their DOJ roles, from which they pursue an anti-torrent campaign for the industry from inside the government itself. Nasty racket.

You can't teach yore granny to suck eggs. The location of the files themselves is irrelevant. Recent court decisions have ruled that having the torrents which are used to connect people that are sharing the copyright material is also a violation of copyright. However, the torrent files ARE stored on the Pirate Bay server. That's what you get when you browse to Pirate Bay. As long as those torrents are stored on a computer that can be identified by law enforcement, etc... they have someone to prosecute and sue in civil court.
They don't run tracker for at least few years already. And they stopped hosting torrent files around last year. All they provide nowadays is magnet link with torrent hash and external trackers.

OMG so many games are yet to be downloaded!! Don't go TPB, we love you :)

What a huge waste of man hours and time.

What I do not understand is, if they seized the domain how does piratebay get it to auto redirect to the new domain?
I clicked my saved fav of the .org and it went right to the new .pe domain.

Off topic kind of, I been using piratebay for many years and it amazes me of those complaining on how worthless it is.
I have never got one virus and have found every single file I ever needed.

hopefully its not down.. it was just a domain hijacking sucker punch

I wasn't talking about the tracker. I knew the tracker(s) had been decentralized. I was referring specifically to "everything else".

The focal point of the whole conversation/thread is/should be the fact that the "copyright protection industry" is looking for ways in which to legally define copyright infringement and a way to differentiate between who is doing it and who is not, how to identify who is doing it, and then pursue legal action against them.

Common sense would think that the easiest, simplest and most-fair way to do this is to simply ban the practice of making copyright material for download, i.e. store the copyright material on the servers. But then Google starts pointing to the infinite number of locations any piece of copyright material could be, and so the copyright infringement industry wants to go after Google and other search engines, and so it not only becomes illegal to host the copyright material itself, but it's also illegal to tell people where to find it.

And, that's called "speech" in my opinion, and violates the God-given and self-evident rights of everyone. But apparently that's what they are getting away with. I just wanted to mention where I thought the line should be drawn.

"torrents", trackers, magnet links etc... any kind of information that can be used in the illegal acquisition of copyright material is given the same prohibited status as the copyright material itself. They've staked out this legal territory and are attempting to claim it. I say let them have it and figure out a way to accomplish the same objective of unlimited file sharing with no threat of government coercion or scrutiny.

Of course, there is no way to prevent a government agency from joining a hive and identifying those peers that are engaged in illegally file sharing, but consider the administrative costs in enforcing the law. Like playing russian roulette with a pistol that has 10 million unloaded cylinders.

I'd like to see an example of a legal case where a plaintiff has been able to prove that a specific person behind a computer has illegally shared copyright material and been convicted of it. They can prove the IP Address maybe. But they'd also have to prove that the IP Address wasn't spoofed, or forged afterwards. And they can prove MAC Address, maybe, but with the same qualifiactions that ought to apply to all electronic data in terms of their evidentiary validity. (meaning electronic data can be easily forged and no one can prove that it was or wasn't)

However, unless they have managed to turn on your computer's video camera, how can they prove exactly who it was that did the downloading/uploading? Maybe someone hacked into the network? I've been in several of my neighbor's networks. Some run unencrypted.
Some are using WEP. Some are using the default password that is given to them by Time Warner, Uverse, AT&T DSL, etc...

The whole thing is full of holes, and I find it difficult to believe that a competent defense attorney couldn't completely dismantle any kind of case like this.

Can't beleive the effort the feds go to with this stuff yet bankers that have literally ruined the world get off scott free

The pirate bay will never go down. They are making a browser where domains are not needed. The Pirate Bay was at .ac but now you can find them at .pe

I've always gone to .se for the past couple years, and it's always redirected me to the correct site.

Wow! I honestly thought it just happened to be, due to my terrible connection.
I'm curious how many times piratebay has change their landing page?
I remember being redirecting to .org for the longest of time, then within the last year of so it being change to .sx .

Piratebay guys counldn't care less. Go to thepiratebay.pe (the new one) and search with "AFK" and see the documentary.

Man pirate bay has been surviving for so long. Many torrent sites have been closed. Wasn't it iso hunt just a couple of months ago?

How can their .org redirect to .pe without any issues? Couldn't the .org be seized too? Why not?

Especially since they're the same owner
