Not exactly. The banned user can still come back. Just because there are empty accounts, doesn't mean people won't want to use them. Who knows what could be going on in someones life.

actually, the way i'd do it is setup a script to watch for when posting stops being frequent on those accounts, and banning them after they start posting again , whether it be weeks, months or years later

that way the asshats selling accounts start getting a bunch of very unhappy customers, lose reputation and start having to refund all the money they made

mods, please blank this post out when you have read it and begin discussing how to get this done, that way hopefully the sellers won't be tipped off

It would be great if all accounts not accessed in two years were notified that unless they sign in within 60 days then their account will be deleted.

I don't think it will happen because this will lower the membership figure which in turn could affect advertising etc.

bottom line is, deleting accounts from someone making them to sell them before they're sold is not really an inconvenience and is really easy to test and figure out what kind of footprint got you caught
but this method, they can't test for footprint without a week+ long testing cycle, and the buyer gets hit, and the buyer then hits the seller's wallet and reputation, which is way worse than losing some accounts
also you could give the buyer enough rope to hang himself alternatively, banning his primary account when his service thread is seen to get reviews from bought accounts

ps. the method i mention above does not reduce the inflated membership numbers appreciably, and only does so when it effects the quality of the board
pps. bear in mind however the odd rarity like myself, i created my account in 2009, and posted nothing until more than a year later, nothing at all, i was too busy reading, earning and learning to be bothered posting

Much rather have 50,000 real and active and decent members than 500,000+ with 450,000 of them fake / freeloaders etc...
and an active marketplace to reflect that quality.

i owned a forum for 6 yrs, many bhw user used it, had about 30k users
and i ALWAYS removed o posters every few months
A 0 account holder is not a statistic of a forums activity
and if is and is a reason to keep it, for stats, i wouldn't do it

My concern is that these accounts could be used for scamming purposes or unscrupulous BST owners could use them to boost their sales threads. It also dilutes the forum.

The thing is, these accounts are created only to scam people and perhaps get more income from fake BSTS. What I learnt from the links posted by WI30SN is that almost all the gigs were opened by a guy called Julian. Recently there was a thread in the lounge about a gig buying fake BST reviews. Perhaps the next time we come to know of such stuff, we should Bid for it, find the guy, report him to mods and get him banned. I wouldn't be surprised if the member is reading my post right now. I can remember the gig being cancelled within minutes of the thread going live. It seems to be easy for them to buy some fake reviews rather than honest ones. It is hard to find out the fake reviews from the original ones. Since almost all demand that the account have a minimum of 200 posts and 4 months on the forum board.

Just found a few links on Google. I am not sure if to post it right here or perhaps buy the gig and find out who the fraud is.

The seller claims that his/her account is over 5 years old and has over 1k posts and 1k rep. The gig was created 4 months ago. Its not only the new accounts you have to be weary of.

Well, I don't think those accounts will go for $97. So it won't make sense to pay for Jr.Vip and then sell the account for a lower cost.

They're most likely to be accounts for fake BST reviews..

But then, there ARE some newbies who buy services from BST legitimately.

Aaric, I also noticed that the sticky threads might be being posted to by bots.

If you go through the various sticky threads you will see lots of new accounts posting nonsense.

Somebody must be making a killing selling accounts. Or they are getting them ready and storing them.

The community can do their due diligence as always and see through this type of shit. A 2 year old account with 0 posts suddenly making bullshit comments to build post count is a red flag as most of us know. Just the same as a day old account doing the same thing is.

Just keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity to the mods... They will investigate and serve them with the almighty ban-hammer as they see fit.

We all have to work together to make this the great forum it is... We also need to work together to weed out the parasites that are useless and are only here to scam, spam, or steal.
