Why is rat meat such a big scandal?

Rat meat is fine, assuming it is prepared with standards and regulations that protect the health of the consumer.

The issue is that they're catching rats that could have the plague for all anyone knows.

It's no different than a cow drinking water contaminated with it's own sewage.

Rat meat in itself is fine, but they're filthy animals that piss as they walk. I forget the name of the disease they carry, but it's nasty stuff. Rat meat is really not safe to consume, (unless it's raised in a rat farm under controlled circumstances) because just like any other animal that carries disease, you could be infected with something really bad. Let me put it this way, would you eat a rat that carries the HIV virus, if cooked enough? (hypothetically, HIV is a human virus...)

Not to mention, if I'm paying for lamb... science dammit, I want f_cking lamb. I eaten a rat, and I've had lamb... there is a big difference.

I couldn't find any laws so far on selling rat meat in the united states if all the sanitary conditions and health inspections are passed. But no one here would eat it due to it being too taboo.

Well you have to think temperature.... Some meats can be cooked to rare and be safe to eat, others like poultry and pork must reach a higher internal temp to kill parasites and bacteria found in the meat. Some can be eaten raw... ie: sushi, beef tar-tar.

The main reason you are not supposed to eat rare burgers is because the grinder may have been used to grind pork for sausage or other meats like turkey and can be cross contaminated.

If someone passes off a pork steak as lamb and it is cooked med rare... Well might be some issues with the eaters bowel movements and such.

Everything on this planet is edible, whether it walks, swims, slithers, or crawls. Just cook that shit long enough and have at it. Throw on a little tobasco sauce and chase it with a cold beer and your good.

You can cook and eat anything you want... Just don't go trying to sell it without the proper inspections and stuff.

That's a little different. I'm not a vet, but it comes down to health standards and how they're raised. Rats off the street are not monitored, controlled, tested, etc... Plus, hogs in the wild are not known for wiping out entire populations through their urine trail.

You could eat your own feces if you managed to avoid the ecoli and other killer bacteria in your colon.

The quick and painless rat trap with some peanut butter does the trick, and the quick death is better then a slow and painful one.

The quick and painless rat trap with some peanut butter does the trick, and the quick death is better then a slow and painful one.

I finish them off with the shovel... I find they're the most effective. I know it's inhumane, but we're talking about the safety of my family. I don't take any chances. And not to sound completley heartless, I found some really nice repellant I've used over the years that smells absolutely terrible, but it's cheaper than the traps and is 100% effective. It disturbs their nasal passages to the point where they never come any where near it. I haven't had to use a trap in years.
