How long will it take to rank #1

Hi guys, I am a newbie to keyword research and after days of searching for keywords I saw one with 31,000 results after I put it in quotes and the competition was basically youtube videos and yahoo answers ranking in the top 3. Rest were forums and what not, so my question is how long will it take me to rank #1 for the site if I do excellent on page optimization for it with lets say 10 articles?

excellent on page optimization will take more than ten articles, IMO

It will also take off page optimization.

"Rest were forums and what not" - Forums are usually hard to compete with, because they have new, dynamic content all the time.

And without joking.. it's the most difficult question that you can ask and I believe nobody can answer to it accurately.

I wouldn't spend too much time analyzing the competition. Google mixes up results for different people. If you and I google the exact same thing, we'll most likely have two different page one results.

For my previous projects, longtails take 3-7 days to be No.1-3, hot keywords take 2 weeks. Hope it helpful...

and the competition of the keyword.

It depends on your competition. The general rule is the higher the competition the more often you need links. Aside from doing on-page, also do off-page optimization by having diverse link profile and getting links from several high authority domains, i.e. web 2.0s, wiki (both ******** and nofollow), press release, blog posts, video, document sharing, etc.

Its hard to say but dont get too hooked on the results ie: 23,000 ect. As you could have 400-500,000 Results and you can still rank top. Its got to do with your competition, they could be really bad, poor quality sites ranking that you know you can do better than. ie: You can make a better site, and better content etc.

Just pick your niche and work hard, no matter what the results are. Dont get me wrong small amounts of reslts for your niche is good, but its gotta be a decent enough niche.

As long as a piece of string. Honestly, the truth is that there is no short answer to that because there are no guarantees. Searching Google for things I need to know in everyday life, away from SEO altogether, I do find that forums are very frequently in the top results, along with Yahoo Answers and Wiki. As someone else has said, they are difficult to compete with because they are frequently updated and will have a lot of links pointing at them. On the other hand, people do manage it and they can do it pretty quickly so it's not a forlorn ambition.

it will take 3 days just build pr 10 backlink only 2 link and you will get pr1 , even you dont have any content you will get pr 1 just by backlink

in 1 month you can reach page 1(not #1) for medium competition keywords, guys who are saying 2 weeks are just misleading you. It's impossible to rank(a new site) for keywords with 40k+ searches to #1 in 2 weeks. It will take atleast 2-3 months. Yes you can rank unknown keywords to #1 within a week or so.

If you don't know much about keyword research then you may want to take a look at some keyword tools out there. Many people use UNF or Long Tail Pro. Those can make your life easier
