Many different ways.
You can buy a bunch of ghost followers, but that isn't to great because they won't like your pictures. Plus, they're just not real.
Content is very important too.
Or you can always just use a but/script to follow a bunch of people, a lot won't follow back, but there are a lot of people out there that will. Plus there are plenty of scripts out there that unfollow people that aren't following you.

If you want it to actually work for you, then quality content and regular updates, as well as actually interacting with accounts that follow you as well as those that don't are the way to go. If you use a bot then it won't look natural and it's unlikely to do much for you.
I'm finding that this method works but takes extremely long!!
Which do you option do you prefer/suggest?
My one week old account has about 3k fake and 2k real followers but that doesn't mean they all come to like your photos, only like 40% like your photos if you're lucky. The other likes have to come from botting. The real problem is monetizing my traffic :smashfrea

I know a photographer who get all his pictures on the popular page. He was an early adapter to Instagram (before changes to the API, way before that), he simply followed more than 100k people before the limits and all hit, and in return got a good 40-50k people to follow back naturally. Obviously since his content (which is very important) is good, people liked his pictures and every picture got him to the popular page hence more new followers. He has unfollowed a lot people now and gained more (sitting at 100k+ followers and following 40k)

next time try to use the search box on the left for better results, quite a few imacros scripts are already shared what can help you to automate your instagram tasks, especially if you do ig on a smaller scale and you're not after multithreading for instance
I'm sorry. I started to tinker with the search box after reading your post and I learned how to use the advanced search tool. I'll try not to ask any more stupid questions moving forward.
